Using hides in rack systems?

I have always had a hot and cold hide in my vivs but I recently moved into a rack system. I never see people using hides in there tubs. I realize a tub in a rack is sort of like a big hide and I know it would be a lot of work in a big collection but I still couldn't take the hides away. They spend so much time in them. Now that they are in there they still use them all the time. Has anyone noticed a big change in behaviour when taking hides away. One of the problems is with the heating. It's back heat and when I get it to the right temp everywhere in the tub the warm hide stays a lot cooler. I'm worried the snake might choose feeling secure over being in a warm enough spot. Also, the snakes can climb and do climb over their hides so their surface area is still the same but it just seems much more crammed when there in there. Any thoughts from experience?

We use large dog water bowls with access to under the bowl. and we add boxes, from various groceries we use. Water on the cool side and box on the warm side. Works great for us. We have 1 rack with back heat and do the same setup as if it were belly heat..... By adding boxes and/or objects in the enclosures you actually increase useable(surface) space by adding levels. :)

I use boxes and paper towel tubes and vines. Babies get toilet paper tubes or toothpaste boxes cut in half, or pieces of egg carton.

I tend to put something in the racks, usually empty cereal or tissue boxes, cardboard tubes.

We use black PVC hides on the warm side of our bins. They are in White PVCX racks with back heat, I never notice any behavior that would lead me to believe that they are uncomfortable, the snakes that are typically a bit more nervous will usually get another form of somewhere to hide as well as the PVC hide such as a box or paper towel tube or something of the sort.

I use hides in my racks too. I like these from RBI; lots of sizes, not too tall, and dark in color for security. I also like how the entrance is offset, for more hiding area. Click HERE.

Nanci, those racks are fabulous!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely keep the hides. I have nice plastic ones with off set entrances as well. I get them from Cornels World, I think they are in Calgary.

He's is our exclusive supplier of racks and show displays, great guy. I went to him with an idea of what I wanted for displays for shows and we sat down one night at his house (there may have been a few bevies involved) and designed them, they are perfect. He's great if you have an idea or want something changed, he will do it if possible!

I'm limited as to what animals I can have right now so I haven't delt with him lots but from what I have seen and heard he is the only guy to go to around here.
