UTH and Thermostat Set Up?

dizeedoo

"Samson" = Amel Zig Zag
Hi,

Today my UTH (ReptiTherm 8W) and Thermostat (ReptiTemp 500R) arrived today. I've been reading the directions but have a question.

This is my first attempt to set up a heater and thermostat. I know that after tweaking the temperature will be controlled (down one end) with the thermostat. But, my snake is a major burrower: I use Aspen Bedding as the substrate.

Do I need to put a layer of paper or something down beneath the bedding? I would be devastated if Samson got hurt. I planned to start out really low and work up with the thermostat and it is only an 8W (10-20gal UTH) but I've read posts saying that UTH's (without a thermostat) can reach temperatures of 100-120 degrees.

I'd appreciate any advice.

P.S. I've had Samson since August '07 - all this time I've relied on the house heating. I use a probe thermometer and his tank temp sits at about 72-76 (the probe is level with the substrate). He's never refused a meal, never regurgitated or had a bad shed (touch wood) so I didnt think I needed a heater but realize he does. Just wanted to explain my delay :(

Thanks in Advance, Di.

Well since you have the thermostat I dont think you need to worry about that. They say if you are using bedding such as aspen that you should buy a carpet to avoid the snake from coming into direct contact with the glass. Since you have your thermostat, the glass will be at a temperature that wont harm your snake.

yes, that's what I read. I wasn't keen on carpet when I first got him because I didnt want anything that might retain odor. Still I'm sure you can clean it?

So, should I put carpet down, or not worry because of the thermostat?

You can wash the carpet in the washer, but its kinda a hassle to dry. But i think since your gonna have the temperature of the Heating pad controlled that you dont have to worry about it. But you wanna make sure that the temperature directly on the glass doesn't exceed 84-86 degrees.

The thermostat will keep the UTH at a reasonable temp so no extra layers (of anything) are necessary. Place your probe thermometer right above the UTH, under the aspen. You want to measure the hottest place your snake could ever come into contact with. The warm side should be in the mid 80s.

I used to use that same thermostat and I had it set in the blue/yellow area. It doesn't have to be on very high to get the right temp.

As above, put the thermostat probe on the glass in the middle of the UTH. You _can_ use reptile carpet, and the snake will most likely burrow under it. You can wash it in the washing machine (have a spare piece) and dry it out in the sun. Eventually, it gets to be a PITA, and the snakes seem to enjoy aspen just as much if not more, and once you switch, you will be so happy.

Yea. I think you should be fine. Just like i said make sure the temp of the glass stays in that range. And your snake could borrow according to what temperature he wants.

Thanks Everybody!!!

I'm so glad I posted because the tip for the probe to be right in the middle of the UTH is great! Knowing the hottest temp in the viv will be great peace of mind. I'm excited now. Another reason to "handle" to set it up.

I know that people have snakes and don't utilize this type of support. That's such a shame, because being active in the forum is invaluable to have access to all of your experience.

You guys rock!
