UTH and tile question?

I wanted to put my UTH on a 8x8 tile so I could just use it if I ever have to get a new tank.
I have a reptitherm one and it has a little lump on the top from the plug..
I was wondering if that mattered at all. 'Cause it wouldn't be able to be directly on the glass because of that lump.

So yeah, do I just ignore it and stick it on there anyways?

Also, I'm new to here so sorry if I mess up this post or anything. haha :]

I've never tried attaching a UTH to a tile, but as long as you can get the UTH under the tank it needs to go under, it should be fine. Before you actually stick it to the tile, try just resting it on the tile and measure your temps on the glass in the viv and see if it gets to the right temp.

What I actually do is to put aluminum foil over the sticky stuff and then attach the UTH with aluminum foil tape.

Ok, thanks for your advice.
It's working just fine without being directly on the glass.

All of my heating pads are on tiles. They cost way too much to ruin one by sticking it to a tank and to risk damaging the mat trying to get it off.

Arise Zombie thread - - ARISE!!

I have been doing the same thing with my UTH - placed it on a ceramic floor tile with the heat-side up under the glass. Tile traps the heat and it radiates up from the absorbative wood table top.

So far so good.

Now I'm moving my gal to a 20L to give her some room to roam at nite.

So I got a new Reptitherm suitable for a 10-20 size as opposed to the Flukers "Mini" UTH pad I ran under her 5Gal tank....

My question; I want to continue the practice of keeping the UTH "sandwiched" between glass and tile, but Zoomed instructions lead you to believe that all manner of bad things will happen if you dont follow their instructions EXACT and allow it to stick directly to the glass bottom.

What say the group -

Continue what I have successfully been doing with the UTH on the tile - or stick the Zoomed UTH directly to the glass?

Thanks all!

Do you happen to have a picture of how you are placing it? Do not want to say something without knowing what you are doing is what I am picturing in my mind

Sorry, no pics... basically a single ceramic tile square on the table-top, then place - do not affix - the UTH pad on top of tile, then place tank carefully on top so as to trap UTH betwen ceramic surface and the glass bottom of the tank.

When you swoosh the aspin around, you can see thru the glass of the tank bottom and see exactly how "squared up" the UTH is relative to where you want it. Then re-adjust aspin to thickness and top with hide of your choice.

So far it has worked out great with the Flukers mini in my 5.5Gal tank. I can't imagine the Zoo-Med Reptitherm wouldn't do equally as well - it's just their directions to put the fear in you...

ETA - I do this because I didn't want the Flukers UTH "permanently" attached, so I could move it as needed for a future acquisition. Same now for the larger Zoo-Med UTH pad.

I've never stuck a UTH to any of my vivs and they've worked absolutely properly. I sometimes wonder if the advice to stick them to things, is some kind of sales ploy to make you buy another rather than moving it to the new tank! There are plenty of ways you can keep an "un-stuck" UTH in place.

It sounds like everything would be good with that set-up. As long as the temps are good, should be good to keep it as is.

Wish I had thought of this before as it would of been nice to move my UTH to the new stack I'm building this winter...Well since its along the same lines anybody know a good way to remove it from a tank? The aquarium tank is going to become an actual aquarium tank once the new stack is built and I'd like to save the UTH to put into the new stack if at all possible to save a little money where I can. I'll be placing tile down inside the stack so would it be safe if I can get it to peel off and then just have it lay under the tile with non adhesive?

Yojoe,

It's not 100% but:

Let it get warm, that will soften up the glue holding it to the tank.

If you're not planning on sticking it back on a different tank, you can use a thin metal spatula or drywall spreader coated in olive oil to slip in between the UTH and the glass. That will pretty much ruin any stickyness, but let you keep the heater intact.

A lot of times, just getting it warm and gently pulling it away, making sure not to bend or twist it, will work too. Heck, I've had a couple that were so weak they'd fall off from the weight of thier cords when they get warm (I'm using tape to hold those in place now).
