UTH, thermostat, and sterilite 3-in-1! >.<

After consideration to my budget and space in my ittsybitsy apartment, I've desided to go with a sterilite container. I've already looked at some of the feedback on this in other threads, and I know using a lamp is pretty well out of the question, because of the plastic. So, I'm going with a UTH with a thermostat, but my question is, where can I find an affordable thermostat, and what type of UTH would be best for this type of enclosure?

Thank you guys!

I had this issue last week

I posted here last week regarding the setup of my new 20 gallon tank. I couldn't find a thermostat at petco or petsmart (at least an affordable one of decent quality) when I went last week so I had bought a rheostat and a uth. If you buy a dig thermometer (decent one, not the stick type), and put the probe under your substrate you can monitor temps well. I don't know if you know what a rheostat does but I'll explain anyway. Basically you plug your uth into this device and then the rheostat into an outlet. The rheostat has a knob that you can control the amount of watts your uth puts out to regulate the temps. Ambient temps outside the viv will make this (the temp) fluctuate a small amount (considering me and my fiancee turn on heat and back to ac quite a bit), maybe not so much for someone elses case, however... for the most part if you use that dig thermometer you should be able to control them and not have to worry about the sterilite tub having any probs. Hope this is helpful at least a bit. You can use the search feature for rheostat if you want more info or check out my thread a couple back in my thread history. Good advice there. If you know about it already I apologize for the excess info.

The rheostat I have is by zoo med and ran me 22 bucks at petsmart. The dig thermometer was 10.99 at petsmart as well and is made by coralife. I do not need to monitor humidity that much as I live in a place with relative same humidity much of the year. I do mist twice daily though and have never had any shed probs or probs with the snake. If you need to monitor humidity as well you might wanna get the thermometer that monitors both humidity and temps. Good luck man.

Thanks for all the info! I hadn't heard too much about rheostats, but it's something I'm definately going to look at now. Who knows, maybe ebay has something :p

Don't waste $20 on a rheostat. You can order the ZoMed 500R thermostat for $19.99 plus shipping at reptilesupply.com. They also have the zoomed UThj for 10.99. Unless the "sale" has ended.

If you do want a rheostat, get a lamp dimmer from Walmart for $9. It also seems to go lower than the zoomed *rheostat*, sllowing lower temps that is..

Oooh, thank you times a million! :)

Yea, either works. In my opinion I never "wasted" money though. My setup works fine. If you want to order online though he's prob right. I just don't order a lot of stuff offline for personal security reasons. Lots of sites that sell that stuff are unsecure sites, but a few are fine. I just don't like chancing that kind of stuff. I never used reptilesupply.com, but I've heard nothing but good things.
