UTH vs. Cermaic Overhead Heater

So, for the past 3 years I have been using the Ceramic Heater (on top) for Cyrus and today I bought a UTH and a Thermastat.....now I am all panicked on how to install this dang thing!!!! It is feeding time so I was going to take Cy out and feed him and get this thing put on, but I have a couple questions!

1.) Do I have to adhere it to the bottom of the tank or can I just set it on the glass top of the table I have it on?

2.) What should I set the Thermostat to, the guide on the back doesn't list Corns and the guy at the Petstore said to follow the Garter Snake guidelines (72-84 degrees)?

3.) It says on the directions if using light weight substrate to lay Repti-carpet down so if the snake borrows straight to the glass it won't get burned. Cyrus does borrow straight on the glass, but if I don't have the heater adhered to the glass would he still get burned?

Thanks!

I've always put the UTH right on the glass but i use aluminum tape to attach it and just leave that piece of paper or whatever it is on so that i can easily remove the UTH if needed. Your going to want to set the thermostat at 75-80 degrees and leave t he probe right on the glass...if your snake is too cold on top of the substrate then it can burrow to get warmer and you wont run the risk of getting burned:) personally i think repti-carpet is just a giant pain and one more thing to have to clean but some ppl seem to get along just fine with it.

Hope i helped, im pretty new to snakes but i hae other reptiles so i've done this a time or tow before ;P

OK, so I have it set up and it is heating up! The only thing I am confused about it exactly where to put the probe! It says not right on the heat source, but in the warmest part of the tank.....so, I have it just above the substrate on the side of the UTH. Is this OK!?

I keep it right on top of the glass above the UTH, under the substrate. My little guy burrows right down to the glass, so that's where I measure the temperature.

Put the probe under the substrate in the cage. It goes on top of the under tank heater. You'll want to set it at 85 degrees.
