uth with wood enclosure

how do you use a uth with a wood enclosure since heat will not go through wood as well as it does glass?

with wood, i'd suggest an overhead lamp since i worry that the uth could cause the wood to overheat, burn, and maybe cause a fire.

If you use a thermostat, even underneath a melamine viv (plastic-coated woodchip) it won't get hot enough to start a fire. I've been running a stack of three melamine vivs with the UTHs outside underneath and they've been fine for ten years now.

You just have to make sure that the weight of the viv isn't resting on the UTH and there's a small gap for airflow. I do this with a couple of cork tile mats the size of the viv floor. Put the first one down. Cut a hole in the second one in the position where you want the UTH. Lay the second mat on top of the first one. Put the UTH into the gap in the second one. Put the viv on top of the mat+mat+UTH stack.

Note: Make sure to sand the edges of the glass used in the project or put silicon on the sharp edges so they are not sharp and could hurt your reptile.
