UTHs and carpet ?

Ok, yesterday I persuaded my parents to buy to new corns (still amazed that it worked...). We have them set up pretty much the same as Whispher with one difference. The heating pad. I've got whispher set up with a heat pad and a light, I think there might be something wrong with her pad as it doesn't really make too much heat. But the new pad heats the bottom of the tank up so much that when my dad touched it it hurt him. So what can we put down under the substrate to make sure the burrowing snake won't burn himself? We have some carpet in the garage, would that work? Right now we just have some t-shirt down, but don't want to use that for too long. I'd be greatful for any advise. Thanks.

Rheostat

Definitely build or buy yourself a rheostat to turn down that heat source. I had one of my corns (poor Egon!) overheat and die, the poor thing. It costs just a couple of bucks to build one (search on the forum and you'll find very detailed plans) and it will save you a lot of heartache!

for a quick fix you can just tape down one layer of paper towel over the heat pad. make sure all sides are taped down so your little one doesn't burrow under neath and burn himself.

Thanks, I'll check it out right now. Want to make sure the little dudes are all safe in their new home.

I do something similar to what lennycorn suggested only I apply the uth directly to a piece of Lowe's bought ceramic tile and put the ceramic tile side directly against the glass (on the outside). BUT, I use a rheostat with it. Without the rheostat, the viv gets close to 100 degrees. If I were you, I'd use overhead heat as a quick fix until you got the rheostat. Personally, I think you'd be taking an unnecessary chance with an unregulated UTH.

Type the word "rheostat" in the search to find the post listed below; I've made 4 in under a 1/2 hour.

How to make your own Rheostat for less than $7!

Ethrin,
I reread your post. Are you using a thermometer. A indoor/outdoor will do,with a probe to put on the substrite. To check your temps. You said your old uth wasn't making too much heat but the other was burning your dad's hand. That might be part of the problem.
Good luck to you and the snakes.
