uv lights good or bad?

I had a bearded dragon and am thinking about getting a corn snake. Most of the necesities are pretty already met what with plenty of hides, aspen bedding heat pad and maybe a red or blue light for night time. But the other thing i was wondering about was uv lights. I had a 10.0 uv light for the beardie and i have heard that uv lights can be benifitial for corn's. IF they are are what type of uv 2.0, 5.0 or 10.0

Hi Brock,
Not sure about the wattage. I have one in my tank. I'd read a husbandry book before buying my snake, in it they talked about the psychological benefits of UV lighting. The breeder I bought my snake from said I didn't it and to just use a blue night light. I bought one of those too but because it means changing the bulb, I've just kept the UV going. Samson loves it when the sun comes through the window. Big light source. He is attacted to it.... He can't get anywhere near the UV bulb but sometimes he wander up there and checks it out.

Mostly though, I like the light on the viv for the aesthetics of it making the plants and hides look more ornamental I guess.

I can't say it is or isnt beneficial - only what I've read.

I've heard anecdotal evidence that UV can cause blindness in lighter Corn morphs as they lack the dark pigment that would protect them from damage. Kind of like putting a redheaded person out in the midday sun without any sunblock. However, this was just an observation from someone who ran a reptile rescue, so I don't think it's ever been proven (she'd taken in blind Corns over the years and they had mainly been paler morphs kept under UV).

Corns don't need UV, because Corns aren't a basking species and have never developed a dependency on it. This is different to Beardies, which will suffer major health problems without it.

I've never used it - these days I don't have any form of artifical light in my vivs and my lot seem to do OK. As with most things Corn-y, there are no hard-and-fast rules, but generally most folks don't seem to use UV with their Corns and I can't remember ever having seen health problems attributed to this.

There are other sorts of light you can use if you want it for your benefit, just to make vivs appear more attractive. Sure others will be along to advise in due course.
