UV questions

Hey all!

My boyfriend and I just got our first corn. It's a beautiful amelanistic, kind of a shrimpy color more than red or yellow. Usually animal albinos freak me out with the red eyes and all, but this little fellow was oh-so-friendly!

We set up a tank that we had used for turtles, it's a 40 gallon tank, which seems huge compared to our baby, but he'll grow. We currently are using a red heat bulb to heat the hot side which is about 86-87 and we didn't end up having to use the under tank heater because the heat reaches the cold side and keeps it about 74-75 degrees. We have a UV light that we used to use for the turtle and on the red bulb package it recommended having a UV light for all reptiles. Should we use this in combination with the red light during the day and only run it 12 hours? or do we have to use it at all? I haven't read anything on the forum about this. Also- Is it alright to run the heat lamp at the same temp all day?

I was also wondering about pinkies. Can I thaw them in a bag under warm water to simulate the warmth of a living mouse or is this not suggested?

Thanks! And I'll have pictures of our viv and baby for you guys as soon as I get my camera fixed!

Corns don't need UV - as they are mostly active at dusk/dawn/overnight, they have never developed the dependence on UV basking that some other reptiles have. You can do without that altogether.

As long as the temps are in the correct range and kept there by a thermostat, you can use any combination of heat sources. Under tank heat is usually recommended for Corns, as they benefit from belly heat when digesting. When using a heat lamp, make sure that the Corn can't touch it.

I don't give mine a temperature change between day and night, but I'm sure there will be others here who do and will be able to advise.

Offering warm pinkies is a good idea, as it seems to stimulate some Corns to eat.
