vegetarian snakes!

On the outside looking in
Everyone at work knows I'm a vegetarian. And over the past month, word has spread that I got a snake and that I feed it mice. And for some reason, this just does not compute. Generally, the second thing people ask (after "Ew! Why a snake?") is "How can a vegetarian feed mice to a snake?" It really baffles me. I mean, if I had a dog or a cat, nobody would ask me why I feed it lamb-and-rice chow or tuna surprise. And just because I don't believe in eating meat myself doesn't mean I believe in starving naturally carnivorous animals. My boss has actually taken to calling me "MK" or "Mouse Killer." Seriously.

Any other vegetarians out there? What has your experience been like?

im also a vegetarian and i get all the same type of questions such as how can you feed your snake mice but not eat meat, its the most annoying question i get theres only one other person at work who keeps snakes and he seems to be the only guy who doesnt ask

Sadly there are vegetarian dog and cat foods out there.

I agree with you though, I don't get why people seem to think this is odd.

I'll bite...but this is pure tongue in cheek.

I think the line of reasoning is that it seems rather hypocritical. That said, from a biological standpoint, our dentition is not solely intended for being vegetarian or vegan so those concepts not matter how much they are described to me as they just don't compute.

I only have one question for you, how can you be a vegetarian and have a pet snake that is not a vegetarian? Seems very strange indeed.

I had someone ask me once why I don't feed my snakes dog food.
I was a vegetarian for a while, but couldn't keep up with it.
I always tell people that being veggie is a personal choice, but for most animals, they are designed to eat certain things...

As for veggie cat food... It's a lie!! Cats are mandatory carnivores. They need taurine in their diet, or else.

I do find it odd that someone with a moral imperative not to kill animals would own an animal that requires animals as food. However, I suppose there are other reasons to become vegetarian. I own a pet shop that is turning into more and more a store for high end dog and cat foods with each passing year. I won't stock vegetarian dog and cat foods. They simply aren't species-appropriate.

The difference is I'm perfectly happy being a vegetarian. Humans have a choice, and I made mine. Dogs, cats, snakes, and other carnivores don't have a choice. And it wouldn't be very animal-friendly of me to expect them all to starve for the benefit of their prey items. I'm most certainly not one of those animal rights people who just wants to save the cute fuzzy herbivorous ones.

I've been a vegetarian for 9 years and have always had pets that require me to feed meat to them. I don't see it affecting my choice to not eat meat at all. I can see why people would think so, but if the food is killed humanly than I don't see an issue. I find it more of an issue that you would expect me to torture an animal and not feed a proper diet due to what I practice. I agree it is weird and I get the same question all the time! I could never imagine not keeping my animals happy and healthy!

It does not seem strange to own a snake and be a vegetarian. If we polled everyone one this site, I bet none of them eat mice.
You should feed your pet the best food that you are able to obtain for it. Wild corn snakes eat small rodents...mostly.

You know, I never thought about that before! Regardless of what I choose to eat, my kids are fed what is proper for them and their required diet (if necessary). Okay, and a few licks of my ice cream cone if they were good.

I remember a TV show about animal hording where a lady had about 15 cats and fed them oatmeal and rice. She was from another country and the ASPCA was having a hard time explaining they needed more nutrients than she was providing, they gave her a bag of food and explained she had to feed them cat food, and it was a good ending, she finally understood.

However, some of the damage that the diet did was make most of the cats blind. Their pupils were so dilated you couldn't see an iris. She surrendered most of the cats and they found good homes.

What? We barbeque mice every weekend! Nothing like gnawing on a nice mouse leg. And we have pinkies for appetizers!
