Hi,
Ive had my corn for 8 months now and he is a year old. He has always stayed in his hides until now, never coming out during the day. For the last week he has been constantly out and about his cage, only very rarely going into his cave but when he does he usually has his head poking out of the entrance, as in the attached pic. He is still as tame and friendly as ever to hold, it just seems weird that he cant seem to hide himself away now. I have been away for 16 days and my housemate was feeding him and cleanin the cage but not handling him (hes scared!). Could it be related to this at all? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm just hazarding a guess. Someone more experienced may say differently, but ... maybe he's looking for a girl? It does seem to be that time of year.

Cute peek-a-boo picture, btw. :)

I have the same question and that is how I found your post. My corn is all over the place during the day now and he usually spent all of the day time hours in his warm side hide. Now, he is out roaming constantly and if he is in his hide, his head is out like yours is doing. Too funny!! I have only had him for about three weeks and I was thinking maybe it was just him getting adjusted, ya know? But he seems adjusted and secure in his surroundings. It didn't take him long. This just started about 3 or 4 days ago and he is SO busy!
Maybe he is looking for a Mrs. Who knows? It's entertaining though. We usually don't get to see him out exploring except at night.

Ok, now he has stopped eating!! It was feeding day, I got his meal ready, put it in there as usual and he went over searched all over the thing and then went back to doing his business. I guess this is natural during mating season too??? Is yours doing this too Shotty? When should I try to feed him again?? :shrugs:

you should read the faq or buy kathy loves book it explains about behavour during mating season very well....

males tend to go off food when its mating season as there hunting for females to roger

:) all will be well my friend

Continue offering food on his regularly scheduled feeding day. He'll eat when he is ready. I'd tell you not to worry, but that is easier said than done, I know. Mine hasn't eaten since March 24th, and despite me telling everyone else not to worry, I still do.

Just a little.

*Heavy sigh*

Ok I understand the hyper activity of the male, even though he was mating for more than 10 straight days,he wants some more. But I'm not sure about the female. She's full of eggs,I think she'll have her pre-laid shed in a week or so,and also hyper active, keeps trying to get out.Is this normal? :shrugs:

Hi there! I've got a two year old corn that I've had for a couple months now. He's been tearing up his cage for about the last month like a couple people have described, and two weeks ago he started refusing food. I know he's in the snake equivelant of "heat" because he's dropping sperm plugs on an almost daily basis, but how long does this last?! A month? Couple months?

Well, my issue just gets better and better. As I have said before, Billy refused food last week and has been VERY active lately. Then, my husband and I went on a 3 day trip Friday. I made sure that everything was perfect for him before we left. We got home yesterday and I noticed that he hadn't been burrowing at all while we were gone. I got worried. So, I opened his viv and picked up his warm side hide. There he was all curled up and the ugliest gray color I've ever seen. He looked sick. I was worried but wondered if maybe it was just the lighting and decided to leave him alone until this morning and if need be, take him to the vet. LOL! I opened his viv to get a better look at my baby boy this morning and this time saw his eyes. They are no longer a beautiful red, they are grayish blue! My poor baby is shedding, refusing food and in need of female attention. LOLOLOL! I know a lot of people on here have butters and have seen them shed. I, personally, have never seen such a light colored snake shed before. I tell ya, this is a gross color on a butter. The poor guy looks like a ghost of himself. I would have made such a fool of myself if I hadn't noticed his eyes and had rushed him to the vet this morning. Geez!
