Very fat snake!

Reptilius Neonatus
Hi guys! So I just ended up with an adult corn- age unknown who was a little over loved in the food deparment. Homeboy is super sweet but needs a diet and exercise program. He was on small thawed rats once a week. I have switched him to live adult mice ( so he at least has to move his fat but to eat) but I haven't had this situation before so I don't want to compromise his health while trying to fix it.

Recommendations? How often should I feed him for healthy weight loss?

I'd get him off live right away. It's a fallacy that snakes use a lot of calories or get a lot of exercise from "hunting" or constricting prey. It's very dangerous to the snake, and inhumane to the rodent.

How much does he weigh? I'd move him to an FT weaned mouse every two weeks, and get him out for swimming, stair climbing, or plain old cornsnake treadmill as often as possible.

Thank you Nanci. It's amazing how many different schools of thought there are on the live vs frozen things. My vet recommends live and I have a few snakes who won't eat frozen... Then I have one who will only eat frozen.

What is this corn snake treadmill you speak of? Is there an actual contraption for that?

No, it's where you hold the snake's upper quarter with your dominant hand, and wind the snake in a figure 8 around the fingers of your other hand- holding your hand in a "Spock" position. The snake crawls forward, but you keep winding it in the figure 8, and the snake gets exercise without going anywhere.
