Okay,

My snake, Nemo, was doing wonderfully in captivity. He was shedding about once a month, and has gone (from christmas to know) from 4 to about 7 inches. He was handled a lot, and always way sweet.

so last week, I had finals, and spent more time studying than handling Nemo.

and now he's way hostile at EVERYONE. i still handled him, but not as long, and still he's going nuts. He does the "Baby-rattle_snake" thing at the air if your closer than a foot to him. he wont let me take him out to clean the cage or anything.

and my hands don't smell like fur, so ive got nothing.

PLEASE RESPOND FAST!

This is somewhat normal. It is also something that a juvenile will grow out of. Have you changed anything, moved, added another snake or changed anything? Sometimes these changes could be environmental. Check the temps in the viv.

Just letting you know, that a snake that small will not hurt if it bites you. It will feel something like a little sand paper. So maybe some good handling sessions will get him out of it.

Good Luck,

Wayne

I can't help noticing that this post has been tagged with "being dropped?" and "head trama".

Has there been an accident with the snake at some point?

My Jaxson goes through this from time to time for no reason at all- he just decides one day will be a pissy day and is:) I ignore it he's only actully bit a few times never breking the skin or really hurting me.

my sis said last minute that he may have gotten dropped in our recent move, but i wasnt sure

Being dropped in a serious issue with snakes regarding how friendly they are. No snake actually likes to be handled, they mainly tolerate it and explore new surroundings. They will relax if they feel safe. However, if they are dropped they will begin relating the sight and smell of a human hand to danger. The extremity of the behavior depends on how nervous the snake is, and it seems as though your snake is taking it a step further. He just doesn't want to be hurt again.

If he was never dropped, then it's simple. Your snake is just a regular nervous baby. 4 to 7 inches sounds like a TINY corn snake...I've never seen a corn snake so small. Regardless, babies are scared. Leave him in his tank without ANY disturbance for a week, and then carefully hold him for less than 10 minutes after that. He should be okay by then.

Well even without being dropped, being moved is enough to make a snake pissy. The snake is unsure of his location, and feels unsafe. You really want to leave them alone to settle in. Even if the tank is the same, just in a different spot, there is stress in moving.

I agree with above posts.

Being moved can be extremely stressful for some Corns - one of my adults went on feeding strike for seven months the last time I moved flat (ate only twice in that time).

Also, if the snake has been hurt and now associates humans with pain, you could have a trust issue on your hands. You just have to go back to square one and teach him all over again that humans are safe to be near. Just don't let the person who dropped him, hold him again.

Alternatively, he could just be coming up to a shed and wants to be left alone. Or he could just be having a bad day.

If you're worried about putting your hand in his tank, buy some rubber washing up gloves. They mask your smell and make the snake less inclined to strike. The bottom line is that you do have to be able to get in there any time you need to change water and spot clean, so you'll have to work hard to re-establish friendly relations. Keep non-essential handling/contact to a minumum for a couple of weeks, while he gets used to his new surruondings.

When you post a question, it's always a good idea to give all of the circumstances so that we can offer the best advice. Half the story could end up with you being told the wrong things.

I have snakes that have and still do this once in a while..I am sorry..but the only advice I can give is to just deal with it..
dont let them win..wear gloves if you are afraid..haha....but the bites do not hurt at all..
uh..
yeah..my snakes get over it fast as soon as I pick them up and hey..They can be however they want..I'm still gonna take them out ....
Mind over matter....in most cases..;)

just do make sure your hands are clean..some times I will even use a drop of han sanitizer just for "poops and giggles"..and then I'll take them out..just to be sure.

But good luck with your little "Rippah"..
and do let us know how things turn out...(Honestly I like the ones with Moxie!"...but thats just my P.O.

take care

These things are all true! We just moved our 08s out of semi-quaruntine in another room, out to the same room as the other reptiles. Now one of the 08s is hunger striking even though nothing in his viv changed at all. Just the location. One of the other 08s is deciding maybe being aggressive would be a little fun all of a sudden now too. I'm just chalking it up to moving rooms and letting them be for a bit to let them adjust.
