Very Quick Questions: Tub/Sterilite Heating

nycflip22

I want another Corn snake
Hi, I couldn't find a specific answer but I was wondering how do you heat a tub? I have an aquarium now but I'm getting a tub for my baby boa constrictor..

Is it ok to run a UTH under the substrate? Should I just buy heating tape?

I'm running to petsmart before it closes..thanks

You can attach a UTH to a tile or something similar, and put the tub on that. But boas are less tolerant of bad temps than corns, so you really would need to regulate the temps with a thermostat.

You are getting a tub? Like in a rubbermaid plastic tub? Thats not suggested because they can easily escape them and poor ventilation/air flow. You want a vivarium. The petstore sells them.

Great quailty vivs:

You also need a heat mat that they also sell at the petstore along with a thermostat. I am unsure the temperature boas require so you will have to ask someone else.

Yea, I'm already getting a thermostat. I was always wondering how those tiles work even when I had my corn..What exactly is the purpose? Would it give off more heat? I'll search for the thread

My setup is going to be the UTH and thermostat.
The holes aren't big enough for them to escape and I have lots of holes for good ventilation. I use a sterilite. When searching around forums for 1 year, I noticed many people use tubs especially when they have lots of snakes. (snake rack)

I have a tub for my ball python. I'll also probably use one for my corn when he grows out of his current viv. I used a sodering iron to melt holes in the lid and sides of the tub, and haven't had any problems with my humidity. I use binder clips to hold the lid on (I got that idea from someone on this forum).
I have my UTH outside of the viv. I lifted up the corners of the tub using those skinny CD cases (one per corner) so there's a bit of an air space between the table and tub. I've heard that an air space is necessary for the UTHs. I'm not exactly sure why, but I would think the airflow helps to keep it from overheating.

Actually, lots of people (breeders, keepers, etc.) highly recommend the sterilite/rubbermaid tubs. They hold heat and humidity really well, are easy to clean, and you can solder plenty of holes for ventilation. With the lid properly clamped shut, escapes are no more likely than with any other type of container.

It is true that some heat mats are not rated for use on plastic containers. I use flexwatt heat tape, which is cheap and easy to hook up to a thermostat (try reptilebasics.com, where they'll wire it for you for free). But many UTH's are also fine with plastic--just check the packaging.
