veterinarian

The way I see it, they're no more "likely" to get sick than any other pet as long as you get the basic husbandry right. In fact they're at less risk than a cat or a dog. They don't go for walks outside and get glass, thorns or ticks stuck in them. They don't rootle through garbage while you're not looking and eat mouldy food that makes them sick. They don't socialise with other people's Corns that are poorly kept, and catch fleas, mites, mange etc. They aren't prone to getting over-excited and escaping from the yard or rushing off into the road before you can stop them.

Having said that, they can get some similar health problems to other animals, like malignant tumours. You can't anticipate or prevent things like that. I lost a Corn to that a couple of years back.

However, most of my vet visits with Corns have been around egg-laying and recovery from egg-laying.

I called up my vet and asked if there was anyone there who knew how to sex a snake. They told me they did. I drove 40 miles to the vets office. Got called into the office but had to wait nearly an hour because the "exotics" vet wasn't there yet. Then when the woman got there she asked me what I had. I presented my little corn and she picked it up and looked at it and commented how cute it was and what the problem was. I told her I called about sexing and she told me she didn't know how to do it. Then we were in the vets for 2 hours because everyone in the building wanting to see the snake. At the end of all the craziness I was charged $56 for not a damn thing!

I would try to avoid taking my snake to the vet unless it were truly sick and I've been searching my butt off for someone in WV that knows about snakes!

Oh wow, I am sorry that happened to you wingedsweeyheart. =( Some vets are just... >.> well....idiots they are supposed to know how to sex a herp if they are an exotics vet. How could she not know that.

You should have just walked out with out paying or something, that's ridiculous. Wait 2 hours and then NOTHING.

Bitsy, when my brother had garter snakes (which he later passed down to me but I was young and not educated) one of them developed tumors but we did nothing about it. I don't remember how they died but we had them for a few years, not long enough though.

I'm glad I posted this because I really wasn't sure about taking them to the vet. Thanks guys!

I would do some searching online or look through your phone book and call up all the vets offices you can and ask them if they are experienced with herps. It's always good to have someone you can take your snakes to if they ever did become sick.

I am adopting a rescued corn snake. I pick him up in a little over a week! :crazy02: I read that it's a good idea to take their first scat to the vet to have it examined for parasites, etc. I guess you don't need to do that if you buy it from a reputable, trusted breeder, but I don't know the history of my snake.

I already know of a good herp vet because I had a bearded dragon and was told of them, so if my snake ever did become ill I could take it there.

Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV)

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV)? http://www.arav.org/ECOMARAV/timssnet/common/tnt_frontpage.cfm

I could have sworn that I saw a reference to it in the forums somewhere...then again...I look at so much stuff. <stares off into space>

Where was I? Oh yeah, ARAV, I used it to find a herp vet in my area. Checking on him now to see if he's legit. Don't need one yet but I figure it would be nice to know ahead of time.

Well I didn't know about that site for one and after searching on it I only found one herp vet in WV and it is in Morgantown and it's a 3 hour drive away from me :(

I would have pointed out that they lied to you, and then told them they owed you 124.99 for your office visit, gas and time. I would have then asked them how they wanted to pay. And then I would have told them I only take cash and held out my hand.
