viewing snake at night (light question)

We are currently using a black reptile night light to heat the 10 gallon aquarium our baby corn is in. Temps are fine, but I think I'm going to try and switch to an UTH (attached to a ceramic tile - with a rheostat - I like that idea).

I'd like to be able to view this baby at night since he is fairly active. I really don't want to flip on the overhead light to see him! I have a 15 watt black reptile night light that I use to watch my (nocturnal) hermit crabs. Would this be appropriate to use to view the snake? It puts out very little heat...

Im new to this too but since no one has answered I will give it a go. (someone correct me if i am wrong!) I believe you can use a red, black or Blue bulb for night time. People say they cant see those colors. I use a red low watt bulb occasonaly If I want to watch my corn play, I dont leave it on though. I turn it off after I am done.

I use a reptile heating pad for UTH and now I have a rack that I hang two lights over one white 60W and one red 40W. Four 20Gal Longs have one of each over them and head mats. Temps are taking from the bedding (not stuck to the wall cause that's a bad place to keep temps)...

The four white lights are on a power strip which is connected to a lamp timer set to turn on 9am and go until about 10pm, the red light is set to go on at 10pm and run until 3am (latest I'm usually up)...

Red seems to work great, the white lights automatically go off and red's come on and not even an hour later nearly all the snakes are out and about roaming and playing. It's really a freakish thing to see those 4 tanks and my two others (not on timers) filled with crawling snakes... it's like halloween 365 days a year in my snake room at night.

Red is nice and doesn't seem to bother them, I'm not going to tell you definitively they can't see red but there is a strong suspicion and probably a research paper or two out there on the subject.

Good luck

and because my explanations suck here is a pic of the shelf unit my dad and I built together from scratch, each shelf you see is actually a drawer that is on tracks and pulls out so each tank is cake to get into:
(this is an old pic from a while ago, since this pic was taken all tanks have been decorated and filled with occupants (see pics at:
my site )

ENJOY!
