Viv cleaning

Hi there Snakeaholics,

I am the proud new owner of two beautiful anery babies, Sissaphus and Azrael. They are currently housed together, but will be separated when I get a second viv at the end of the month. Am having problems getting Sissaphus to eat, but have been scouring the feeding forum and got plenty of useful info on what to try so am not panicking too much on that score (though you can't help but worry a bit when you're new to all this and your baby hasn't eaten for 10 days!)

What I did forget to ask when buying them was what to use to clean out the viv. Might sound like a bit of a naive question, but I don't want to use anything that could be harmful. Is ordinary disinfectant ok?

Any advice gratefully received,

Thanks

Blue
PS its a great site and reading through the posts has been very useful annd informative, as well as downright hilarious at times!

Hello Blue,
I use a reptile disinfectant called Bio Clean. It should be available from any reptile store. It is expensive at nearly £6 for 250ml but lasts for ages.I have 10 snakes and 1 gecko, they all get cleaned out using it and I have only used 2 bottles in 12 months.
hope this helps.

Hey

Where abouts in London are you???
where did ya get ur snakes???

I used to live in Chelsea

Thanks
Alex

For my once a month cleanings I use a weak bleach solution. I empty the tanks and fill them up with the solution and let them sit there for an hour or two. Rinse out very well, with garden hose and let dry in the sun (some bacteria/parasites require UV radiation to die, even bleach won't kill em).

For quick cleanings due to "accidents", i.e. snake decided to poo on the side of the glass, snake had a really big poo, snake thought it might be fun to tip over the water bowl, etc. I just use dishwashing liquid and scrub it, and rinse it out well. Oh yeah, I use paper towel for bedding.

'Fraid not - I'm new to this addiction, so don't really know what's what yet, but if I hear of anyone I'll let you know.

Cheers

Blue

It is definately an addiction.I bought my first corn snake only a year ago.We now have five corns, two kingsnakes,a garter snake,a sinaloin milk snake, one brazilian rainbow boe,one crested gecko and two frogs and every one was "definately the last".
