crazy for corns
hey its summer and i have a lot of spare time...

do you guys have any ideas for ufn things i could make and put in my viv for cover/ decoration? not too expesive, and easy to make please (no power tools)

also, does anyone know if i could transplant a plant from my back yard into my viv? i'd get a shallow but wide pot for it, that way i could bury it and the dirt under my substrate. then i could just take the pot out when its time to clean the viv.

if i cant transplant them from my back yard, could i grow some from seeds?

if i could transplant/ grow some live plants in my viv, does anyone have any recomendations on what kind of plant to put in there? or what kind of plant to avoid?

thanks in advance for your help =)

I'd avoid planting real plants in the viv seeing as it can be an intense breeding ground for bacteria and such that could harm your snake.

ok. thanks for letting me know.

so no real plants.

any ideas for fun new hides i could make for him?

I just used an exo-terra hide for his warm side. His cool side's hide is an old piece of wood I found in the backyard (was bleached for an hour then cooked at 300 for 30 mins), and around it I wrapped up fake plants to create shadows and such.

I refer to his, as my own corn :p.

hmm ok. i guess i could hollow out a log for him... gotta find a log first.

should i hollow it out, then bleach it, or bleach it, then hollow it out, or does it even make a difference?

I didn't hollow it out, I used it more like a support for leaves to make a sort of little tent.

hmmmm ok. well i think i will hollow one out, b/c that takes longer. so do you think i should hollow it out first or bleach it first. i was thinking hollow it out first, because that will expose a different part of the log, and that part would need to be bleached...

Although I personally wouldn't recommend using the moss it comes with, the ExoTerra snake Rock hide (the one with the whole in the top peice) is pretty good. I've also got their more open hide. Jasper loves it.

Paper towel and toilet tubes are the cheapest and probably most widely used viv decor you'll find.

For corns, you want sturdier plants so they can't trample them when slithering over/through them. Snake plants fit this criteria perfectly. They're extremely sturdy and only need to be watered once a month (yes, only once a month). The smaller types of crotons are really nice. They have broad leaves, need only partial sun, the temps needed are perfect for that of a corn enclosure, and they're really colorful (green with red & yellow depending on how much light they receive).

Just go to your local gardening store and look around. The two links above should help out for sure.

If you like, cork bark is a VERY very nice addition to any cage. It really adds a more natural sense to it.

Here's a couple old pictures of a natural viv I'm working on. It now has a snake plant in it, another live plant of which i do not know the name of and nicer driftwood.

This huge 4' enclosure is for my very first corn, Buddy. This is one of Buddy's offspring, Zara, that belongs to my friend.

Hope that helps! :)

Pfffft! Neither of my snakes use theirs. I see all these cute photos of snakes in their little tubes. Mine literally turn their little scaly noses up at them and give me their best Paris Hilton "I'm SO sure" look. :nope:
