Viv idea

Okay, so the wife thinks that Butter deserves to get a nice home after all he's been through and live on the main floor of the house. Who am I to argue, really?

But we want something both roomy for him and attractive. So, having a hour and a half to chew over ideas driving home from work today, something came to me. I thought maybe I'd try to find a nicely made (ie, looks like nice furniture, not laminated particleboard), hopefully oak, used entertainment center and convert it into a viv. Replace the doors with plexi, line the inside with thin melanite sealed with silicone, add a few vents, false bottom with a heat sourse underneath, cut out the top and put in hardware cloth. The unit I have in my mind's eye would have a small storage space underneath, which could house the thermostat and odds and ends. If I found one that was meant for a 36 inch TV or bigger, it should then have a good deal of floor space, and allow for lots of branches and things for Butter to explore. Perhaps a loft mid-way up to add more space.

Thoughts on the PITA factor and practicality of the idea? I have plenty of time to come up with plans B through Z...

I bet it would be easier to just build something out wood and seal it real nice for that professional look. This way you're building from scratch and can make it completely centered around a viv design and not a "conversion". Though your idea sounds very cool.

I wouldn't even deal with hardware cloth though. Just use vents for ventilation. You can search around for ones that are designed for vivs just like you describe. Would be much easier.

Yeah, I'm sure it'd be easier to scratch build. I just suck at finish carpentry so it would never look like a good piece of furniture.

I can make a nice box, though. :)

My brother and I did that, I recently bought a house and it came w/ an entertainment center so we converted it to Viv. I will try to post pictures tonight, we unfortantly had some flaws and 2 are still missing but once we worked out the kinks it works and looks great.

We used that board that you can hang tools on in a garage, too early in the morn, my mind went blank on what it is called, for the backing for ventalation. sliding plexi in the front, make sure it is thick enough! and for heat we used heat tape w/ a thermostat. We need to modify the two spots that let snakes out of.
