Viv lighting

Hi, I did try a search on this but all that came up was to do with photographic lighting.

Anyway, I know corns don't NEED extra light but I was thinking of putting a light into the vivs just so it's easier for me to see them in the evenings and was wondering which lights would be better, strip lights as used in fish tanks or the normal bulbs, and also what wattage and so forth.

Any help appreciated really

I use 6watt strip lights in the back of my 2 display vivs. They heat up to 96F MAX and thats if you keep your hand on them for ages. They provide a little ambient heat as well as an attractive view of the viv. The snakes don't seem to mind them, infact they do very well with the 8am on, 9pm off light hours and structure their sleep/activity patterns around the light schedule.

Ok, thanks for your reply, with a 6 watt strip light would I need a cage around it to stop the snake getting burnt or is it not necessary?

And also, would I need to take it out when misting the viv for shedding?

Thanks again

I have a 60 watt CFL light in the heat lamp on top of my screened lid. I only use it for the light during daytime hours 8am-10pm. It doesnt put off much heat at all. You can actually hold your hand on it without getting burnt. I use th UTH for my main source of heat.

And yes I would remove it if you are misting.

Nope no protection necessary, it's only 6watts and heats up to a maz of 96F (I tested it for a week with various thermometers strapped to the hottest parts of the bulb LOL)

I use 40 watt incandescent bulbs for heating my tanks during the day, and on the other side I have a blue UV light that gets turned on at night. Both of these are in those clamp lights, without the clamp lol. IMO it's important to have some sort of UV light, for growth, and my snakes seem to enjoy it a lot as well.
