Viv size question

Hey everybody my brother in law just got this glass terrarium from some lady that had her snake pass away. It is in decent condition and I just cleaned it today with bleach cleaner. Should that kill the bacteria and whatever else could be on it? Also the measurements are L 48" W 12" H 19" would that do for an adult corn and if so could I put my baby corn in there? Its about 4 months old give or take.

Hey. As long as you did a thorough cleaning with a weak bleach solution, and rinsed and aired it thoroughly (no lingering bleach smell), the tank should be fine. It's also large enough to house the corn for the rest of its life. I don't know what the lid is like, but it should be very tight fitting with no holes larger than 1/8", and you should be able to secure it with a wide-style tank clip on each side. You shouldn't have a problem putting your 4-month old corn in there as long as you provide plenty of hides across the entire temperature range. Of course, a small snake will also be at greater risk of escape if that lid isn't secured! Don't ever rely on weight(s) to keep the lid secure. Good luck. :)

A good rule of thumb is to place the snake in a container with a perimeter at least twice the length of the snake. Using that standard your viv would accommodate a five foot long snake, definitely a big adult.

As far as putting the youngster in such a big viv, it's a personal decision. On one hand, a smaller viv is easier to maintain and a small snake will probably feel less exposed and more secure. On the other hand, the large enclosure can accommodate more hides and provide more exercise for the snake. If you decide to put your small snake in the large viv now, be sure the lid is secure and doesn't have any baby size openings through which your hatchling can escape.

The lady also did give me some clips that are probably for securing the lid, but anyway thanks for the responses I just wanted to know one more thing would the baby snake be fine in the larger hides because I want to have the viv set up with everything the snake will need as its larger.

They like tight hides where they can feel confined. If you already have decorative large hides, you can put them in. But I'd also use some cheap toilet-paper tubes, bent cardboard, etc. until the snake grows into the big hides.
