Vivarium Accessories and Mites

We have 4 month old candy cane corn who
had a couple mites on him this morning. Called
reptile specialist at vet and he said that Repti-Bark often
breeds mites. He said it is extremely hard for them to 100% sterilize and remove all when packaging. So, I removed the bark now just have the astroturf with hide boxes, climbing limb (not real wood), etc. Does anyone know if I leave that half log hide out in there, can it breed mites too? I forgot to ask the vet and he is in surgery for rest of the day.

A GOOD TREATMENT FOR MITES

this may be contravertial (sp?) but I got it from a local breeder with very high dollar snakes and it worked for me so everyone please dont yell at me-I tried this and it WORKED FOR ME! It should treat the entire cage with all caves and whatever. I treated 16 snakes with no problems

get a no pest strip from the store, cut it in 1/4" x 1/4" squares (1cm x 1cm for you europeans...hehehe
 ) and put them ON TOP of EACH cage (NOT IN THE CAGE)

leave them there for 3 days then remove them.

Wait for 3-5 days and repeat. (the second treatment is for any eggs that may have hatched)

there should be good ventilation so the fumes can go in and around the cage to kill any mites that traveled. Ive been told that mites can move up to 50 feet looking for animals.

you should clean everything out before the 1st treatment, but that is all that should be nessecary.

good luck

I simply took everything out of the tank, left the tank and accessories to soak in hot water and bleach . I microwaved the wood accessories (or 200oC oven) and scrubbed tank really well. I had real plants in the viv so had to remove them incase mites were in soil. I also chucked out my woodchip substrate and used paper towels instead. Haven't got around to getting new substrate yet but will sonn and will check for mites (funny images of me with sherlock style microscope!)
