Vivarium heating

Ice9

Im getting some new vivs in about a week (3 of them) and being wooden , obviously I cant put the heat mats underneath as I have been doing.

The leaflet that came with the heat mats I have (Habistat) , say that theyre safe to install inside the viv underneath the substrate and wont get hot enough to harm the snakes , they`ll all be on thermostats anyway to make sure they dont get too hot , but I wondered if any of you use this set up and if youve had any problems. Also , what do you use to fix the mat to the floor of the viv?

cheers

I used to have a Habistat mat in my leos wooden viv. It was fine, I had it taped down to prevent them getting under it. I also had one inside my snakes tank for a short while but took it out as I was worried the snake would find a way under and hurt itself. So long as you have a thermostat (with probe attaced to mat) and the mat is well taped down, I can't see there being a problem. Could be wrong :p

thanks for the re-assurance :D

Im going to have the thermostat probe on the substrate as usual , but Im going to put the probe of a thermometer directly onto the mat itself too , just so I can keep an eye on it.

If it's in the tank, you might as well just put the probe on the mat and that way if your snake burrows down, it wont be too hot for it. I guess there wouldn't be mucg diff in substrate temp and mat temp if it's in the tank anyway :)

Ill probably try both and experiment a bit till Im totally confident its not gonna get too hot. :)
