Water Dish Mystery

Hey all - I have a good question:

ALL the snakes that I have, before I bought them.....they were basking in the water dish. The previous owners said they always like to lay (coiled up) in the water. NOW once I had them home they do not do that! Usually they burrow in the substrate or just lay in the tank watching me or whatevers going on in the living room. Same with my Ball Python-laying in the water at the store...not anymore once I took it home. Why, once they were at my place, don't the lay in the water anymore???

I'll ponder any theorys! Thanks!

I've heard of some snakes that when they get hot they like to sit in their water bowls could be it had been too hot now its perfect!!:D

Perhaps their previous environments were either too hot or too dry. Snakes will lay around in their water dishes for both of these reasons. If they have a more appropriate environment in your care, they just don't feel the need to stay in their water bowls so much. Good for you for providing a better place for them!

Aye! ok cool! I was kinda worried a bit, it is a very dry climate out here. I change water 2-3 times a week and spray them all with a mist bottle whenever I think of it (2-3 times a day). Also I get a big towel and soak with warm water...and lay it on top of my python tank. She really seems to like that. I may firgure out a way to circulate water through something like that for the corn snakes..for humidity. But first I have to design a rack! I'm babbling again....Thanks!!!

i agree with the others in pet stores all the snakes have lights on them so u can see the better making there atmosphere 2 dry so they spend more time in the water than any where else!!

Yeah...

I hate the way some pet shops use bulbs in the middle of tiny enclosures. If this happens then the whole tank heats up and so the inhabitants cannot escape the heat. That is probably why your snake used to curl up in the water bowl.

I have 3 water bowls in my BP cage, all different sizes.. After feeding the snake ALWAYS goes into the water bowl sitting ontop of a heating pad.. so its not that rare i think for that to happen..
