ok, i went to clean the poop out of bert's cage, and i noticed like a little orangey rim above the water in his dish, i FREAKED... took it out threw it away and for now just took a plastic water bottle, cut them bottom off filled bottom with water and put it in for now... but this scares me,.. i bought that water dish from the damn store i got bert from ... its some kind of metal, i didnt take any chances i just tossed it... and i fed him today and he was the best hes ever been, is this something i should worry about? :shrugs:

I think since it was a line above the water it is more likely that something was in the water. If it wasn't, that would mean that the water in the bowl was at the same level long enough to cause oxidation. You probably change the water(and clean the dish) often enough to keep that from happening.

yeah i do, i clean his water everyday... this happend over night, but i threw it away and am keeping the plastic one in now

Prob'ly a good choice. My Cheerio has a large green ceramic soup bowl (lead free, not a China import). She always takes a dip in it right after eating and resetting her jaw, then she takes a long (seriously, about 10 seconds) drink. For some reason it looks cool to watch a snake drink, don't know why, I just like it.

i find plastic is the WORST thing to keep water in for long periods of time... i just recently switched my 5 birds over to all metal dishes. plastic gets real slimy and gross after awhile, and if you have "hard" water, it gets an odd calcium-ish coating on it. i use the exo terra water dishes, they don't seem to be as bad.

Thanks, Katia. I didn't realize that about plastic. All my creatures have ceramic bowls.

(I like your cockatiel's name, raptors are some of my favorite animals, death from above an all that)

no problem! yeah i was just definitely fed up with plastic. ceramic is wonderful too!

and yes, raptor is a totally sweet name, by little brother actually came up with it, and it suits my cockatiel PERFECTLY!

Plactic dishes....

can lead to bacterial infections and allergies in dogs and cats. I always wondered if this (bacterial) could happen to reptiles. I use crocs.
