Water dishes...

This is a serious question that doesn't involve kittens.

What's a good natural looking "rock" water dish? I've bought two so far and while they look nice they both eventually leak water and I end up with soaked substrate. Ironically, both are dishwasher safe. Call me a stickler but I think a water dish should at least hold water. Looks like I'm back to using a Pyrex-type dessert dish for the moment. Anyhow, my viv is in the living room and I'd like it to look natural as much as possible. Must be my hilljack coming out.

I suppose ceramic may be a solution. Afterall, Zanesville Pottery is just up the road. Then again, this Pyrex dish works really well. Then again, if he wants a soak I'll need something bigger. (starts examining the wife's casserole dishes.)

I pick up the ceramic cat & dog water bowls when I find them for good prices. Also some little crocks for pets work well too.

I get a variety of sizes, of course, for the differnt aged snakes.

2nd hand stores are a great place to find them for good prices.

I have ones from a Minnesota ceramic artist who makes rock-looking hides and water dishes, but he doesn't have a website and as far as I can tell, only wholesales to local reptile shops. They look similar to the link soccer191 provided.

They look cool, but are much more difficult to clean because the texture inside isn't smooth (especially if you get any sort of hard water deposits). If you can't find what you need and end up having some custom made, I'd see if they can do a smooth glaze inside the bowl (like the cat & dog bowls) to make them easier to clean.

I know they don't look natural, but I really can't stop talking about how amazing the Ikea dog bowls are for our snakes. They are black plastic, and very deep, and the underneath of them makes a wonderful hide for our snakes. Black is a very unobstrusive color, and you get a bonus hide that your snake WILL love.

They also come in two sizes, suitable for even the largest king or cornsnake.

I probably should ask about how big the dish needs to be. Do I need to worry about one big enough for a 3 foot snake to crawl into? The one's I've tried so far are in the 6 inch diameter size. :shrugs:

From what I've read, it should be big enough that the snake can submerse him/herself in, because they sometimes like to soak in it before a shed.

Casserole dishes are not that expensive. "Honey, would you like new casserole dishes? You pick them out on the Internet & I'll get them for you. Oh, and can I have the old ones?" There you go, w00dgl0blin!

They are not color blind but I doubt they will care, so get something you won't mind looking at!
