Weird Poo :/

Hey everyone,

Let me warn you now this will be a little in depth!

Anyway, today Salvador shed, and it wasn't great (came off in 2 pieces) but it's fine now, we put her in a container with damp towels which she loved and the other piece came off. Everything is intact including the eye scales and the tip of the tail. Anyway, she did a poo too which we found odd because she last ate on the 13th of March (now 12 days ago because we don't like to feed her whilst she's blue). We thought maybe the shed had caused her to hold it in maybe?

The problem is that the poo is strange. I'll put pictures of it here, so as you can see there are strange lumps in it, there's around 4 and they're about 3mm. A couple are kind of greenish too. The poo smells pretty normal, less strong if anything. The sawdust in the pic didn't come from her, I grabbed a handful of it by accident when I picked her up to put her in the container. Does anyone have an idea what these lumps are? Is it normal? Every other poo she's ever done has been runny, kind of like a bird, with the white bit that's kind of powdery and more solid usually- so this is strange to us. I was slightly worried because they look kind of organic and squashy (can't think of a better description), could she have some kind of parasite? She's never come into contact with another snake other than her brothers and sisters before we had her, and we don't even come into contact with other snakes that could have contaminated her, let alone having another in the house.

She's approximately 10 months old, weighs approx 28g and measures approx 22 inches if that helps anyone? If that seems small then she didn't eat for around 1 and a half months when we first got her and as we're keeping her as a pet rather than to breed or anything, we haven't tried to feed her quickly to get her big- just stuck to the munson plan. Other than this poo she seems very healthy, is growing well, shedding every 5-6 weeks, hasn't refused a meal in 7-8 months, never regurged and is very active unless she's just eaten when she hides as is the norm for corns.

Sorry that this is so long!!!

Green anything in snake poo is usually not the norm so it might be indicating a problem - maybe internal parasites or something.

I think the general suggestions on here will be to take a sample to a vet that knows what they are doing to have it checked out for parasites or disease.

It might be worth waiting to see if she does the same thing the next time and watching her very carefully for any changes to her personality - eg if shes moving around less or acting lethargic - that would probably mean a visit to the vets to be sure things are ok.

It could possibly be - and be aware I am not an expert - that she could have gotten a little gummed up and this is just the result of her guts clearing themselves out - but that you mention green colouration is what makes me wonder...

Im sure better people than me will advise you on this and good luck & I hope its nothing serious for your snake :)

Thanks Jemma :) Especially for being so fast! I think we'll follow your advice and see if the same happens next time. She may have been constipated if it's taken her this long to poo since we fed her. It's only slightly greenish, the pictures are quite faithful to the actual colours if that helps anyone with their advice?

Snakes also don't generally poop when they are blue, so if they ate, then went blue, they have to hold it that whole time. It's quite common to find a poo wrapped up in a shed. The shape of the blobs, and texture, don't bother me at all.

Cool, thank you so much. You're always so helpful! It's so nice to be able to use this forum to talk to like minded people and to get help from people who know so much more than we do! Thank You :)
