hi all new here

ive just got my first corn on sunday.

he/she is great but theres so much worry.

plus the pet shop wasnt a lot of help.

first of all i set tank up and left "rusty" alone for a while he/she hid as i thought it would but came night time and his feeding list shed it was ten days since his/hers last feed so being a noob i went in and scooped him up gave him/her a pinky and to my amazement he/she wolfed it down.

futher reading on the internet said that i shud have left him(he a him now) alone for a few days "was it wrong to feed him so early??"

he keeped it down and pooped a few days after i didnt handle for a few days after.so i think it may be ok.

one more question is "how shud i get him out of his tank for handling and feeding hes always wrapped up it his bush thing hes got??"

last one is "i can get the temps right its too hot on warm side and to cold on the cool side is there anything i can do temps are 31dgrees on the warm and 21 degrees on the cool side.

im sorry for such a long first post but im really worried already.

thanks

Hello mate, welcome to the forum.

Basically, yeah you should leave about 5 days before a feed when you get a new snake. After feeding make sure you leave 48 hours before handling again. I'm not surprised he wolfed it down if he's only fed every ten days. That's an adult feeding schedule.

Temps should be between 80 - 85 degrees F (so if you get 82 that's 28 degrees C), this should be achieved using a thermostatically-controlled heat mat (or another heating device, just make sure he can't come into contact with it if it's a bulb. Remember, bulbs tend to suck the humidity out of an area, so humidity needs to be between 40 - 50% on average, but higher during a shed). You can get thermostats at good prices from www.livefoods.co.uk. The cool side should be between 70 - 75, so your cool side temp is okay. The general rule of thumb is 10 degrees F difference between the two sides.

Your tank should have at least 2 hides, one on each side. Oh and well done for feeding outside the tank.

20 grams is very small for an 8 month old, this is because he's being fed too infrequently. He was probably fed every 10 days to save the pet shop money. He should be feeding every 5 days, refer to the Munson Plan for details. Grab yourself a set of digital scales, and a digital thermometer with a probe if you don't already have one.

In response to the handling question: If you want to pick your snake up, do so by reaching in firmly and quickly, but be gentle. As soon as you have him in your hands he should calm down. If you do get bitten it won't hurt, and keep handling so he doesn't associate biting with being left alone. If he's in an awkward place, sometimes it's best just to leave him be. For feeding time, if he's in the bush remove the bush with him in it into the feeding tub, hopefully when tempted by food he should come out. Then you can just replace the bush.

All the best

i feed him earlyer this week and how wolfed it down again plus he was looking around for more so ill see what hes like with two pinkies next week i think hes ready i just dont want to rush into anything.

temps are still up and down but ive ordered a thermostat so that shud solve that problem

Snakes will stay in 'feeding mode' for about 20 - 30 minutes after they've eaten their prey item. Corns are opportunistic feeders, so if they stumble upon a nest of unprotected pinkies in the wild, they'll do their best to gobble each and every one of them; since they don't know when their next meal might come along. But this doesn't mean they're always ready for it, and a regurge can be the result.

As I said previously, check out the Munson Plan (which I linked to above), grab a set of scales that weigh in grams, and go by that, it'll make you feel a lot better. It just makes things a lot easier for you and the snake ;)

Oh and well done for getting a thermostat mate, just make sure when it arrives you put the probe directly on the heat mat and fix it in place. Thermostat dials are often way out so make sure you take a bit of time to get the temps right.

All the best
