Went on a corn snake supply shopping spree!

Hi everyone!

I'm so excited I wanted to share this with you all. Today I went on a shopping spree for corn snake supplies! First I ordered a Herpstat ND digital thermostat online. Then I went out and got a 20L Critter Cage, ZooMed Reptitherm 10-20g under tank heater, an 8-qt bag of Aspen Snake Bedding, a pair of feeding tongs, ZooMed medium water dish, some bendable vines, a resin rocky outcrop hiding place, resin branch hiding place, and a Zilla digital thermometer/hygrometer. I think I still need another thermometer for what's going to be the cool side of the cage, and of course, some frozen mice before I get my corn. I think I'm going to get a metal frame aquarium stand for the cage that has an open bottom, because I'm worried about the heat from the under tank heater. What do you guys think? Let me know if I'm forgetting anything! I'm so excited!:dancer::dancer:

You're going to love the Herpstat!! Make sure you look at the Hide Log Horrors thread and see if that's the branch you got. If so, it's best to saw off the hollow limb preemptively.

I love your greyhound! I used to have one and yours reminds me of the one I had. She was such a good dog.

I'm gonna have to find that log horror story thread. I have some grapevine things I ordered for each viv, but I think they are safe. Better double check though.

the only thing off the top of my head i can think of that youre forgetting are 2 hides- one for the cool side and one for the warm side. these can be boughten or made from things at home like sourcream/coolwhip containers, plastic bowls that arent see-through, tupperware containers that have been painted with a krylon plastic bonding type spray paint so theyre not transparent. etc etc. but i really like my exo-terra cave hides, i got for cheap at www.petmountain.com. a lot of sites and stores carry these too. =]

Save yourself a lot of money by not buying the small bags of Aspen packaged for snakes.

1. Tractor Supply Stores have huge, packed bags of Aspen for around $10 that will last up to a year for a single snake.

2. National Pet Pharmacy, right now, anyway, has shipping of huge bags of Aspen for around $5, and the Aspen itself is only around $11. I buy the Sani Chips, but they have shredded as well (though it's out of stock this morning). I have 2 bags of Aspen Sani Chips that will last me at least a year, as well as a bag of shredded for my Gerbils that will last several months.

3. I have found smaller, packed bags of Aspen at Target as well. Not as good a value as the above, but still much better than the snake aspen at Pet Stores.

Congrats on getting your new Corn. They are such GREAT snakes! And it sounds as if you have done your research and are off to a wonderful start.

Well Done!

is tractor supply the shredded kind that you find specifically for snakes? I don't like the chipped look, I like the shredded.

I have found both. My local only carries the chipped, but when I go to Athens for a clinic (I work with Pacemakers) they carry the shredded. I am sure they can order it for you as well.

Thanks everyone! Thanks so much for the comment about Brode!! He's such a great dog--soon he'll have a new brother or sister!! LOL!

It is always exciting to get new stuff for the "kids". I got a surprise $25 gift card for Amazon.com, so of course I went shopping in preparation for separating my babies. I got another thermometer and UTH for the second tank, and also 2 10 gallon size reptile carpet. I am thinking to put the reptile carpet down to add another layer between the snakes and the heater and add a nice layer of aspen on top. Does anyone know how safe it is to use reptile carpet over a UTH?

I'm sure it's fine. I had initially bought that but immediately switched to Aspen. I'm not sure you really need it though if your temps aren't too hot. Just put a thick layer of aspen and that should be all you need!

I was thinking about it because I have been having trouble keeping my UTH from getting too hot. I got my thermostat today though and it seems to be working well. I have the probe under a hide and sticking about an inch or more into the bedding directly above the heat pad. The temp is 85 there and about 75 above the hide. Is that okay?

It goes directly on the bottom of the tank, not sticking up at all. 85 on the floor is good. Mine varie, it goes up too high before it shuts off. I don't think it's a big problem, but I keep lowering it so it doesn't get up so high before shutting off. Right now it's set at 83 but it goes above that before shutting off.

Nanci, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the "bad hides" thread!! I checked one of my new hides and THAT's the one I got!! I'm going back to PetSmart right now to take it back!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

How fun! I remember how excited I was when I bought all the stuff for my corns. I totally envy you your Herpstat. Gotta get one of those some day. :)

Don't forget to stop by some dollar stores! They have lots of stuff that you can decorate with. Just use your head and make sure you don't get anything that a snake would get hurt on or stuck in. I get all my vines and flowers, ect from the dollar tree. I have to use a glue gun so the flowers wont fall off the stems but it's sooo much cheaper than buying the stuff at the pet stores or even at stores like Walmart. I also find cute little things that make neat hides. Like for Halloween I got some little tomb stones and a pumpkin that you put a tea candle in as a hide. Every time I go shopping I'm always finding stuff that I think would look neat for my snakes to hide in or crawl on.

The tealight holders are great! I was also checking out the oil burners. I will be getting some for the new tanks, but haven't found any that I fell in love with yet.
