Western Cottonmount (Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma)

Pruddock

Gig 'Em Ags!! Whoop!!
Well I (Payton) finally got around to editing the photos (quick run through Lightroom® for contrast and vignette boost) from last weekend and thought I’d throw them up.

It was a relatively mundane trip out to Lick Creek as I got out a little late and it was already warming up for the day. I did, however, end up running into a nice little surprise! This is only my second Western Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma) ever, and the first one I’ve ever been able to capture while it was gaping that beautiful white mouth at me!

I walked up on this little guy while I was walking a dried up creek bed and he couldn’t have been calmer. You’ve got to love the awful reputation they get because of that defensive open mouth display.

Anyways, the rest of the day consisted of a few different species of frog and plenty of Common Ground Skinks.

For more shots feel free to check out the blog post on our site in the Field Diary Blog.

Yeah all he wanted to do was scoot away from me as fast as he could lol. It took a lot of coaxing with my boot (snakeproof) and tongs to actually get him to coil up and gape at me. Funny little snakes.

Who? OH! Peyton! Now I know who you are. Why didn't you spell it write it the first place, Skippy?

I was lazy with the text and ripped it straight from our field herping blog where Chase and I have to designate who we are lol. But, it does kind of work considering a few of the other threads here recently :grin01: I'll just go with Skippy next time and save myself the trouble ;) lol

Did I miss when this picture was taken. Dry creek bed, we are floating away now!!!!

Great picture!!!!

LOL that's definitely true after this weekend! You'd be amazed how dried up Lick Creek has been this summer. It's just now starting to get back to normal even after all the rain we've had lately! I can't wait to get back out there now and see how good the herping is!

LOL!! This summer was horrible!!! After it dries out a little bit, it would be fun to see what is moving around out there. I remember when Lick Creek was a very special place that no one knew about. I stopped going out there to walk my dog because people take there aggressive dogs out there and watch while it attacks your dog.

Yeah I definitely had to brain a blue healer one time out there with my snake tongs when it went after my dog so I definitely know what you're talking about. I normally just walk off the paths and straight off into the forest to avoid everybody. I end up finding more snakes that way anyways :grin01:

That's the reason you have a CHL.....or at least SHOULD have one....

Sam and I are thinking about getting it this Saturday actually. We've been talking about it for the past 2 weeks, but can you carry in a State Park?

In Texas state parks, yes. TPWD says that nothing in the code prohibits CHL holders from carrying on TPWD lands. That's just shiny!

The federal land / state laws thingie is still a little "Grrrrrrr!' right now.
