SO, first clutch ever, bred motley ghost het blood to blizzard... There must be some hidden genes with these two, because this sure looks like a hypo mandarin baby.... Any ideas? Pioneer advise, bc all the others look like blizzards... ???

I'd give it a couple of sheds and watch as that orange comes in a little more - might be a little clearer at that point. I've hatched Amels that look a bit like that to start with. Not suggesting for a second that yours is an Amel, just that they can look very off-kilter to start with when they might change radically over a couple of weeks.

Um... I just ran motley ghost het blood (i.e., diffused) x blizzard through the corncalc and the results were:

Male: Ghost, Motley ( Anery, Hypo, Motley ) het Diffused

Female: Blizzard ( Amel, Charcoal )

Phenotype:

1 / 1 Normal het Anery, Motley, Amel, Charcoal, Hypo 50% poss het. Diffused

Genotype:

1 / 2 Normal het Amel, Anery, Charcoal, Hypo, Motley
1 / 2 Normal het Amel, Anery, Charcoal, Diffused, Hypo, Motley

So to have blizzard (or any other morph) babies, there'd have to be some hidden/unknown hets in this pairing....

true, true. the genetics calculator from Ivan's Vivarium has got my mind flipped... I guess time will tell after a couple sheds.

EXACTLY!!! Something isn't adding up... :headbang:

I'm going to go ahead and say amel.. because the amels that I hatched last year all had those orange spots and looked like snows until they grew for a few weeks.

Is it possible your blizzard is actually a very light snow, and that the male is het amel? That makes more sense than the ghost motley also being het for both amel AND charcoal.

The yellow on the neck between the saddles tells us this animal is not homozygous for anery A OR charcoal. It's likely a late bloomer amel, or even a late bloomer hypo/normal. Nautley hatched out looking not too different from this critter and now she's a super dark hypo.

*edit to add photo of Baby Nautley*

I have to agree, give it a few sheds and see what happens. :)

Looking at the yellow on the tip of its nose i would say a Snow! Is the belly clear or checked?

Except that snows hatch out pink/white, not with yellow/orange circles between the saddles.

She does look pink in the pic! A little washed out but some hatch like that! I actually did think opal when i saw it but the yellow changed that!

The yellow and orange can develop on most morphs when they have just hatched! I have had hatchlings with some really intense orange between the saddles and thought cool but it fades after a few sheds!

Just the yellow on it tells me its Homo Anery! Also with Amel and Anery being the most common hidden het found its these i look for first!

Could the Parent be a Snopal and not Blizzard?

Did any other morphs come from the clutch or just normals?

Please keep us updated!
