What do I Have??

Rocket Scientist
Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. I just got my first corn snake a few days ago and of course the pet store didn't know anything about it. I just took a picture of him so to see if anyone can tell me what I have. And any idea of age? The pet store didn't know that too. Also any breeders in New Jersey?? My next snake will come from a breeder not a pet store. Thanks again and I glad to be here!

Bill (KicksNJ)

Welcome to the site!!!!!!!! There is a lot of information here. Be sure to read the FAQ section in the forums. They answer a lot of questions.
There are a lot of great people here. Everybody is always willing to help.

That is a great looking Amel. Mine just shed and her color is not as dark as yours. You found one great looking corn. I wish mine was that dark.

Congrats Bill, and welcome. :) Beautiful amel.

I don't want to scare you, but I wanted to bring something to your attention. I noticed that there is a dark look, and slight swelling (?) around the eye that's visible in the picture. Especially near the bottom of the eye. I enlarged the photo, and when I've seen this in the past, it has usually indicated that the snake has mites. They look like moving flecks of black pepper. You may see them on the edges of the belly scales too. Sometimes you'll see them drowned in a container that the snake has bathed in. Just an fyi. Hope I'm wrong, but it's treatable anyway, so don't panic.

:eek1: :eek1: :eek1: WOW! That Amel is AMAZING! Agreed... I would have loved to have found an amel that dark too.

side note: Why are only Amels allowed in NJ? That seems silly. AND makes me really happy that I dont live there! :grin01:

Well, I'm not sure other than corns are only found in the southern part of the state IE: the Pine Barrens. I agree that it is an unecessary law, like most states, but at least the "barrens" is a protected habitat. I was born and raised in NJ, and still have a fondness for it, but also glad I no longer live there! If you live there and have a "red eyed" corn, you're Ok by law.

BTW, real good eye Dean! :wavey:

Oh I see... so snows, blizzards, amel bloods etc are all ok there, at least a corn lover in NJ can have "some" variety then if they have have to be "albino" to be ok.

Agreed, unnecessary law.

KicksNJ - Keep us updated on your corn, if he had mites and how he is doing etc. :shrugs:

New Pictures

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your replies. I put the macro lens on my digital camera and took some close-ups of the eyes. I don't think its mites. Looks like something is lodged in the one eye. Maybe the beeding from the pet store. It was a dark brown. I am using aspen myself. The other eye seems to look a little dark in spots around the lid as well. Should I try and wet a Q-tip and try and get it out of the eye or take it to a vet?? thanks again for everyones help.

Bill

I think it still could be mites. The single infestation I had on a few hatchlings eons ago made the eyes look like that. I couldn't see the individual mites around the eyes, but the skin around each eye was misshapen like in your pics, making an irregular circle with dark stuff embedded at different points around it.

A vet visit couldn't hurt, but if it were my snake, I'd probably keep it rooms away from any other snake, practicing max hygeine after handling it, or its viv and contents. I'd fill a bowl with cool-to-lukewarm water, and submerge the snake up to its head. Every minute or so, I would submerge the snake completely for a second or two, including the head. I'd do this for 10 or 15 minutes, looking closely for mites exiting the eye area, and looking in the water for mites that have drowned and/or become dislodged. I'd also completely clean its enclosure, and use white paper towels as substrate. I'd repeat this procedure every few days until the snake's next shed. If I saw no mites by the next shed, but the eye areas didn't look improved after the shed, I'd see a herp vet. Good luck.
