So I went into work today, dreading another Monday. When a co-worker walks up, and hands me a pillow case containing a live snake. I was both happy, and saddened by this.

So the question is: What do you do?
What would you do, when a co-worker walks up to you and hands you a live Wild Caught snake?

The person in question knows his snakes.
He Knew EXACTLY what it was. This is both good and bad.
(In this instance it was JUST a black ratsnake.)

I like gifts,as much as the next guy.
BUT I DO NOT like wild caught animals.
I also don't like surprises of live animals at work.
(This caused BIG problems, having a snake at work,
from certain other people.)
Too many risks, too many diseases.

LOL well, the last place I worked.. a snake wouldnt have been a big deal. I would have just put it in my locker and let it go when I got home. Everyone I worked with knew about my snakes.... even if after that some Refused to come to my house :D

What they thought was weird is that I would capture the bats, snakes... what ever, that came into the building and let them go outside... they couldnt figure it out. Well, I would rather have the bats catch blood suckers And the snakes catch the wild rodents than putting out traps and such :)

I guess it all depends on where you work and if you have a "secret' place to put it til you can figure out what your going to do with it. But I would still be thankful it wasnt killed. Even if I personally wouldnt handle a wild snake :D By the way... I wonder how they got it in the pillow case if they were afraid of it??

I did rescue a racing pigeon that had flown into one of the windows at the hospital where I work, so it wouldn't seem odd to look after any stray or injured animals that I found or were brought to me there.

I would have to thank them, and let it go...... I would also explain to them why I was releasing it...It's good for the rodent problem etc. In reality W/C do not fit in with any of my plans, and I wouldn't want to take the chance on an unknown quantity....But I wouldn't tell them that....LOL

What I would do depends upon a variety of factors, including why they caught it and brought it to me and what species it is. I can't think of any reason not to thank them, but whether I kept the snake or released it would depend upon several factors. If the person had caught the snake purposely to give it to me, and I did not want to keep it, I would release it but would wait to tell them for several weeks and then say I had to release it as I couldn't get it to eat and didn't want it to starve to death.

And as for the problem it caused at work...YOU didn't bring the snake in, your co-worker did and you had no prior knowledge of it.

I'd just say thanks, but I don't have room for it. Then suggest he took it back where he found it and let it go.

I'd say thanks, take it, then release it as soon as my shift was over. But I would tell the person who gave it to me exactly what I was going to do with it.
As far as having it at work, I would have put it in my locker for the day. And if I didnt' have a locker, I would have found a drawer in my office to put it in till the end of the day.

See I would be concerned that if they caught it for you they might try to catch another one for you, which would just repeat the problem. On the whole, I'm not too keen on live animals of any sort as surprise gifts, because new animals require commitment and research to learn and provide what they need--which can't always be provided on the fly. I have heard this story more often with fish--people surprising others with fish, sometimes even adding them to their tanks (a personal nightmare of mine). I have a hard time keeping my opinions to myself, but would try to be polite that someone had thought about me.

Which is why I personally would tell them exaclty what I planned to do with it once I got off from work.

If it was a corn snake, I would probably get it vet checked and keep it.
Anything else would be released.

Often, indigenous snakes have restrictions and rules about being kept. I personally have no desire to deal with those or the potential for disease, parasites or other problems that come with keeping a wild caught snake. Typically the cost would rival that of simply purchasing a healthy snake from a reputable breeder.

That said? I've made exceptions. Both were clearly late hatchlings captured as the weather was turning. Both I kept and fed through the spring.

Enjoy!

First of all I'd be happy they took an interest in me and my interests and be grateful they thought enough of me to go through the trouble of catching a snake to bring me. I would thank them and then explain that I was not really interested in adding a wild caught snake to my collection. I would ask them where they got it so I could release it in a familiar area and hopefully they would not be too hurt that I didn't want to keep their gift. If I had been wanting a wild caught snake and they brought me one I would want to be sure it was legal for me to keep that species. And if it was legal to keep it I might try to convince THEM they needed a pet lol, I would then have someone at work I could talk snakes with!
