What Does This Mean?

So I've seen in a few threads people have said "You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours." What does this mean? Is this a good thing? A bad thing? This is the first forum I've ever seen this, so I'd love to know! Thanks!

People who feel inclined to give a "thumbs up" to a post can choose to "rep" a post.
However, to avoid abuse, a person can only rep several times a day- it is limited. If one tries to rep beyond said limit, you get that message.

The number under the number of points of each users roughly shows how many "thumbs up" said user got. Be aware though that the more rep you have, the more effective your own rep will be(for instance, a person repping another when he has 1000 reputation points will add say... 5 points while another who has 10000 reputation points will add 50).

It's really just a way for people to pat one another on the back, which is really nice... I don't pay much heed to it beyond that though :)

Just to add to Oren's explanation...

If you have reached your rep limit for the day, and try to rep another person, you will receive that error message. Some still want to let the other person know that they attempted to rep them, so they post the error message. There is also an error message for repping the same person too often.

And to add onto Josh's post, to rep someone, or give them a pat on the back as Oren put it (nice way to say it Oren :) ) you go to the scales symbol, at the bottom left of that persons post and click on it, a little box will pop up that you can add a little message in for that person, saying why you liked their post, or to say thank you for a particular post that you found helpful :)

Thanks so much! On my other reptile forum we have "thanks" or at least we used to. It's basically the same thing. If you have lots of thanks, then it's generally someone you can trust.

I was a little confused with this system when I first started too, but I like it, as long as it is not abused. :)
