What Exactly Is A Hide?

hello(again),
i read allot about people having hides in there Viv's....what exactly is a hide?

yes you need a hide very much minumum of two one on the cool side and oe on the warm side and a hide is just something you snake can go into to feel safe and comfortable

Welcome to the forums. A hide is simply a place for the snake to take cover and feel relaxed. They can be as simple as a cardboard tube, or as elaborate as a store bought cave. I have found that snakes seem to be more at ease when their hide is touching their body. I use plastic flower pot saucers with either a hole cut in the top, or a notch cut out on the side. They are inexpensive and easily replaced if soiled. You should provide a hide or 2 for your snakes, they will sometimes make their own hides by tunneling in the substrate

It really depends. I use shredded coconut husk A.K.A. Eco- Earth OR Bed-A-Beast. What is the name of the product you are using? I would not use any thing you get from your yard. You can use anything from News Paper and paper towels to Aspen Shavings( Very Popular!) to Reptile Carpet. it really just depends on you and what is available to you. If you live in the U.S. you can get bags of Aspen shipped to you for cheap and no shipping cost from the free shipping part of PetsMart.com

I would seriously think about getting shredded aspen(like in my pics) It is absorbent, virtually dust free, and has a tendency to mesh together, allowing the snakes to burrow easily if they desire. Also, whatever you use, be sure to feed in a separate container, or place the meal on something that will insure the snake does not ingest the bedding. A lot of products CLAIM to be safe if ingested, I'm not "buying it"

yea i usually make sure he has it half way down before i put him in his Viv...but next time I'll wait till he finishes...thx

Looks like what you have is red cypress mulch which is fine as a bedding although we tend to use it in the chondro vivs, not the corns as it holds moisture really well and you don't need that for the corns. I think your snake will like the aspen better, and I'd get one more hide for the cool (?) side so that there's two. I just cut a half circle hole in a tissue box and use that. They seem to like it alot.
