What happens to missing snakes ?

Just a random question but does anybody know what happens to snakes that escape ..... Do they eventually , sadly , starve to death or do they eventually get found by the owner in a dark corner or something ... Just interested .

I suppose that the large snakes are eventually found but smaller ones maybe corn hatchlings presumably starve.

What are your experiences ???

I have heard that some snakes survive and even do well after escaping. I've heard tales of people finding snakes a year later. :dancer:

Sadly, my personal experience is that I lost one hatchling never to be seen again and lost a yearling only to find her dead a couple weeks later.:(:(:(

I have a friend who lost his six foot reticulated python, only to find it hidden within a couch. I think the snake was missing for almost a week.

i would think it surviving in the wild would depend on its morph i mean a bird seeing a bloodred is alot easier then a bird seeing a normal corn

Corn snakes would not make it where I live. The spiders and centipedes would get them before a hawk, fox, cat, or even a chihuahua. We have some gangster chihuahuas in my town. One of the reasons my kitty stays inside besides all the other reasons stated.

Meet Skully. She was missing for one year. Escaped as a 2 year old. Found as a 3 year old. She was covered in scabs and filthy...but fat and happy. She was very nippy at first but has calmed down. She was lost in my living room when I didn't click her lid all the way but was found in the front yard sunning herself on the sidewalk. My ex (roommate at teh time) threw a shirt over her and wrapped her up. I was so happy! She was my very first snake. She gained a ton of weight and I truly did not see a mouse in the house all that winter. Guess I know why!

That is a very pretty snow. Lucky she stayed around your house, many people will kill a snake simply for being a snake. I heard on the news about a year ago a mother found a young king snake wrapped around her baby's leg. She lived in an apartment building, but no one claimed the snake (I wonder why.) If I found a king snake around my baby's leg I'd consider it a totem and keep the snake.

I lost an adult and she turned up seven months later in the apartment downstairs. Looks like she hadn't gone outside the building though - she probably wouldn't have survived that.

My sister lost a 2ft boa and about 3 months later she turned on her surround sound and it sounded really funny. She looked into one of the speaker boxes and found her snake coiled up in there fat and happy.

I have misplaced my snake Dusty twice. The first time he got me evicted for being in my neighbor's apartment. The second time, he was trying to say hi to the girls and was trying to get into their tubs. I since learned to keep his tub at the bottom of the stack. Same with Candy. She escaped once and my dog Lady alerted me to the fact that the snake was in the hallway.

Then there are the four babies. Recovered one, lost three. I also managed to lose a snake in a car, but discovered him when I opened the door again. I'm surprised I still have all the snakes I do. I have a habit of losing them.

If I were to find any of the three babies, I'm betting they'll either be dead or in my neighbor's apartment. Two were non-feeders to begin with and the third was only 5 grams when lost.

all my snakes i have lost have been recovered. *knocks on wood* the first escape was when my boyfriend changed Sage's (ball python) waterdish, and at the time she was in a 33 gallon tank. he didn't click the lid down properly, and she escaped. i have no idea how long she was out and about, but i think at least a day or 2. i ransacked the room, and eventually found her coiled up in between our mattresses. i sure hope we weren't sleeping on her!

the next escape was our female anery, somehow got out of the rack. we found her in behind somebody else's bin.

once our spider ball python got out as well (which Dave didn't tell me about, because ALL the escapes were his fault! lol) and Dave found him in a boot in the walk-in closet beside the rack, haha.

the only escape that was my fault, i'm not even sure was an escape. i went to feed my goldust male who was just a teeeeeeeny tiny hatchling. now either i missed him in the shavings of his shoebox bin, or else he was in the toilet paper tube when i took it out. didn't feel like it, but i forgot how light hatchlings are. so yeah he either somehow managed to escape and slither away really quickly when i opened the bin, or else he did escape. i completely uprooted everything in the room (on my lunch break haha) and didn't find him. i was in tears because i knew he was so small i would probably never find him. BUT! when i got home from work, i decided to have one last look for the day, and who do i see making a b-line for the bathroom? my little hatchling!!

i was so happy!

Every body's stories are making me hopeful that I will find my missing Kanita. She was sooo beautiful and I often think about what became of her- it has been about 6 months, though.

Maybe I will come across her in the spring!

It would probably depend on if they stayed inside for the colder climates and if they were able to find food. Even in Mew England I could see a snake hiding out in the walls eating rodents for a good long time.

I remember this story from while back http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83981. They get a rescue snake that had been kids pet that they kid under their bed until it escaped. Three months later it is found and the mom assumes it must be starving, but the snake managed to find some good food source because it became a total porker. Turns out the original owners had some squirrel nests in the walls that was quite the nice buffet.

Squirrel nests! I day dream that Kanita has found some tasty food and is hiding out in the walls.

Here is hoping!

Years ago I had an adult Snow that was an escape artist, I'm talkin Houdini level talent. She pretty much would come as go as she pleased. She could usually be found around feeding time somewhere around the rat cage. The longest she went missing was about a month and then she came and found me, I woke up with her in bed next to me.

a more recent story....

Hey all,

funny you started this, cause the little anery disappeared 3 days ago. I found out after about 13 hours since I last saw.
Usually I have a webcam with a motion detector connect to my iphone on the viv. it was off this time :)

anyway, I knew he could only go left or right. chose the right side behind the closet and put the webcam there.

at 1 AM I get an alert, I'm at work, and I open the camera from the phone.

and there's the little guy, 4 frames, and he was gone again.... :(

but all is good! a friend found him last night coming out behind the TV while he was watching it.

and here's a picture...

I actually didn't tell anyone in house.
I thought, this way, whenever I hear a scream, I know that's where he is :)
