what kind of light?

What kind of UV light do I need to get for the cornsnake? I know its not required, but I want it more for astetic purposes, and If im going to get a light, I might as well get one that will benefit the snake...

Like you say, it's not needed for corn snakes. If you still want one you'll probably need to spend $20-30 instead of a buck or so. I haven't used one in many, many years, so I don't have much of an opinion on that. I would make sure whatever light you used has natural coloring and won't be able to burn your snake.

I would say all that's needed is a 2.0 from Hagen. That's the one I'm familiar with, but if you're getting one from another company, look for the one that is simply for viewing the animal or the lowest value one, as opposed to a really heavy duty one for desert animals or even a medium one for forest animals.

But I wouldn't advise leaving it on all day. I think most people who have a light on their vivs only turn them on when needed to see for spot cleaning or whatever. Since corns are nocturnal, there's not usually much to see during the day anyways and even less to see if you have a light on all the time, because they are more likely to stay hidden. ;)

Not needed!! save the money to buy more Corns...
69 corns here and NO uv light in sight!

UV will be of no benefit to your Corn. They don't use it to metabolise calcium as some basking reptiles do. As above, you run the risk of your Corn hiding away even more if you use UV.

If you'd like a light for your own purposes, then I'd try one that gives off light with as little heat as possible - maybe like LED lights?

I use a dinky 10w aquarium strip light to light my ENTIRE ROOM that my corns are in, they'd rather you not light them up like a reef tank. :grin01:

If you go to Home Depot or a similar place, look for a CRI # (color rendering index). Try to get one with a # above 90. !00 is the color mix of the sun, and colors show up the best in natural light. So animals and plants look better under a light with a CRI in the 90s. Not every brand will show that number, but many will. Ask somebody who works in lighting if you need help.

The CRI has nothing to do with UV, since UV is invisible to people. That would be something else entirely if you decide you want one. However, I don't know any breeders who use them for corns. Keep in mind that UV output declines A LOT in bulbs after about 6 months or more, although it won't affect the output of visible light at all.
