woke up this morning to find the one of the 3 remaining corn snake eggs has pipped and withib mins the little one popped out fully... then i realised there is something that doesnt look good..... there is somthing hanging out of it from about 2cm above the vent... it appears to be about 3-4com its thin and pink in appearance and has a bobble on the end of the same texture...any idea's what it is?could it be an umbilical cord? please shed some light dont want this little one to suffer if it is?

thanks bex

Hey Bex, yes that's the cord, sometimes the umbilical area doesn't close fully after the yolk's been absorbed. If you put the hatchling in a tub with damp tissue it should drop the rest of the cord in a day or so. Here's mine from last year that was dragging the egg around!

I did lose one the year before though, it somehow managed to pull more of the gut out before it closed, so I had to euthanise it. On the one from last year you can see the line where the umbilical area closed up in the last picture. Good luck!

friendly suggestion...
to be honest i was in a bit of a rush kind of fretting about my little snake rather than concentrating on my spelling... if it offended you then i am most sorry but i though this forum was here for people to seek advice on their snakes and to share moments that people have had not to receive criticism over their spelling!

I'd say mine were the friendly suggestions! Again Bexs, good luck and hope the snake thrives for you.

Bex, those things happen from time to time. We have had good results doing as Janine suggested. But we have had two over the years that just didnt make it. The openings never closed up. Unfortunately, that is part of breeding.

Good luck with your hatchlings! And yes, this is a place where you can get some really good advise and many different views. Yet, as for the spelling issue, in the past, some people havent been taken seriously over some really bad grammer and spelling. I completely understood you and keep in mind, this is a forum not a chat room or texting. It will really help you in your future posts.

Hang in there Bex!
PJ

thanks for your replies

i've not long since checked on the little one and noticed that the cord has come off well the majority of it... there is just a small amount hanging there now approximately 4mm so no where near the amount this morning....... hopefully this is a good sign.

thank you for your messages they are very much appreciated

update

well i know its been just shy of a year but i just strolled across my thread! the lil one whom i started the thread about whom we named "tablets" made it! YAY! he started eating three days after the thread was posted :) he was due to be sold but i could not part with him so he was added to my growing collection! :) his mum and dad have produced another clutch those year which are due in 10 days ish :) not that im counting :D hopefully I wont have the same problems

I am so glad to read a year later that he is doing well! I plan to breed next year & am concerned about such things!

Nobody has mentioned this, and maybe everyone knows, but that is where the snakes belly button will be.
