What will I get

I think I know the answer to my question, but I am going to see what you all think.

This past year I bred my normal (she proved het for albino) to my albino motley stripe. I kept 0.2 out of them, one normal and one albino. Now my question is, in 2 years when I breed those 2 babies back to there father (albino motley stripe) what % of albino motley stripes and am I going to get any normal motley or normal motley stripes?? I have Kathy Loves book, but this whole genetic thing confuses me. My next goal is to try to breed out some awsome looking candy canes (any suggestions?!) :crazy02:

Well, your amel striped motley will have made the normal het amel and both of the babies het either striped or motley. He cannot give BOTH striped and motley genes to the babies. Therefore, when you breed the normal back to the father, you should get some normals, normal stripes or motleys, amels, and amel stripes or motleys. When you breed the amel back to the father you will get 100% amels. Some of them will be stripes or motleys.

I believe you can also get striped motleys, as well. For example, if your normal is het stripe, she should give the striped gene to some of the babies. If the father transfers his motley gene to those same babies, then they should be striped motleys.

I hope that's not too confusing ;)

By albino, I'm going to assume you mean amel.

Each of the babies will have inherited a stripe OR a motley gene from their father but you won't know until you breed them. you have to remember that it is impossible to be het for motley stripe, you can have het stripe or het motley but if the snake is het for both you have a snake that expresses the striped motley look.

The amel baby will give you 100% amel babies and about 50% of the total will be motley, striped motley or stripe depending on what she herself got from her father.

The normal has also inherited a copy of stripe or motley from dad so approx 50% of her babies will get one from her and all will get a stripe or a motley from dad. In that clutch you can expect that about ½ will be amel and ½ will be normal.

Hope that helped

I have a corn predictor program and according to this, breeding a male motley stripe amel and a classic female het amel will produce 25% amel het motley, 25% classic het amel and motley, 25% amel het stripe, and 25% classic het amel and stripe. It would therefore appear a bit complicated, because according to this it would depend whether your classic and amel babies are carrying motley or striped genes. Breeding an amel female het stripe to a amel male striped motley will produce 25% amel striped motley, 25% amel het motley, 25% amel striped, and 25% amel het stripe. My brain hurts!

:shrugs: :shrugs: :shrugs: :shrugs:

Now give me a lifetme for that to sink in!!! That actually helped a bunch.

Thanks

I think it's pretty cool that we all said exactly the same thing but in slightly different ways that was you can have a better chance of finding the explanation that clicks with you best!

Well then, what will I get....

I got a 0.1 albino motley stripe this past week end at the show. What will I get when I breed her to the male albino motley stripe? Will I get 100% albino motley stripes??

not exactly...you should get amel stripes, motleys, and motley stripes. That is unless they are both het for another gene. For example...if they are both het anery, then you should also get some snow motley-stripes.
