What would be a good heat mat size for and 36 by 18 glass terrarium?

For my corn snake, I have a Zilla critter cage that is 36 inches by 18 inches. What would be the dimensions for a heat mat for this terrarium?

There are several manufacturer and sizes. You want roughly about 1/3rd of the tank bottom. It can be a tad bit bigger or smaller, it's not going to matter. The main thing is to remember that those pads get really hot, and they need a thermostat. Otherwise you run the risk of burning your snake. Most of those pads do not come with a thermostat, you have to buy that separately.

I use 2 of them in my tank because it gets really cold in the winter here. They both measure 12 x 8 inches. I keep one set at 86 degrees, and 1 set at 73 degrees (just in case it gets cold in the tank). If the temp is above 73 then it doesn't even kick on.

For the dimensions you posted (36 x 18), if you are planning to run just 1 pad, I would use at least a 12 x 8. Personally I think you'd be better off with a 18 x 8.

Here is a link to the brand I use:

I have a UTH brand that says it doesn't get too hot. Don't believe the literature that comes with these. I've measured 110F on the glass with this UTH unregulated.

A t-stat really is a must have. Some of the older literature will say that the t-stat is not necessary for colubrids, because unlike some other popular pet snakes, the colubrid will leave a spot that is too hot. I don't agree with this logic, however. The pet is stuck in a cage, and shouldn't have to choose between one space that is dangerously hot (and the warm hide may be too hot over an unregulated UTH, even if the snake can get some insulation on top of the bedding in there), and a space that is too cold. We should make the effort to get the temp just right.

Sometimes easier said than done; I know.
