whats another kind of snake that makes a good pet?

Ok i want a new snake. but i was thinking maybe another kind? so here a list. of snakes i was looking at. i know they can all bite! but which ones would you think make a ok pet. Or is like a corn snake. i just dont want something that wants to bite off my head.

1. Ball python.
2.sand boas? (they look really pretty!)
3.Any other Kind of python?
4.Baby Western hog nose (Jeeze they look mean!)
5. CALIFORNIA KINGS (allot of people on the site have them as pets..)
6.rat snake? (isn't that like a corn snake Kinda?)
7. Any other snake i missed you think is Nice..

Ok so Am i way out of my rage. and should i stick to corn snakes? or could you see me with another kind of snake?

Just from personal experience I would highly recommend a grayband kingsnake. They are so docile and easy to handle and with the two phases (Blairs and Alterna) there is some variety to their looks.
If you do get one as a hatchling though - make sure it is eating mice before you buy - I have found that some people sell them still eating lizards and I know firsthand how difficult it can be to switch them over to mice.

Hognoses are great too - they are all bluff. But again, make sure it is eating mice before you purchase.

well, I dont know if its a color thing for you or size or just what but.... I have to say.... I just bought 2 mexican black king snakes.... they are really sweet hearts!! very calm, very nice, havent even tried to musk or anything yet... Would something like that appeal to you??

Oh yes! those guys appeal to me! hehe *I want/I need my membership! lol*

I say King also, I love the MBK & of course Cali King They have such funny personalities I'm finding out.

I do love my ball pythons, but if I was just after one pet snake - I probably wouldn't recommend them. They're not "display" snakes, and depending on the snake you could end up with one that you can't really handle too much without risking its feeding.

The other NA rat snakes are quite nice, but not too much of a departure from corns. My bairdi are kept pretty much the same as corns, but they're flittier and enjoy musking. Depends how different from a corn you're looking. Milks and Kings mainly fit into this category as well I think, as not *too* dissimilar from corns to keep.

Even though I am not a boa fan at all, I think a BRB is an excellent choice for a pet snake, and I really enjoy owning our boy. They get to a decent size (not too big or chunky that one person can't handle them, but certainly different from corns), once out of the baby stage they're calm and gentle to handle, they tend to be easy feeders, and if you have a nicely kitted out vivarium for it, they will use it and explore, so they're visible and can be appreciated even when you're not interacting with them.

Royal python all the way! (ball python) I got one a few month ago, she's a little star, people are always saying they have eating problems and it does put some people off, but most people i know who keep them have had no problems, and if feeding problems do come there are ways around them, my royal is a baby and she has never bit me, she's great to handle, eats well, and is very easy to keep

Ok I am going to be a blunt one on this..
If you age is correctly listed you are at the age probably still living at home? If you are, what are you plans for the next few years. College? Are you in college right now? Will you have room for your critters when you move?
Sorry I have seen to many stories of parents getting rid of the pets when their children move out and leaving them at home. So at this point, where are you going to be and how are they going to be cared for is to think about.

Next.. once you have weighted all your options and it looks possible then I say go for another snake.
I highly recommend the following.
Mexican Black King
or a Milk Snake of your choice.
Or a nice KSB..

I would stay away from Balls or hognose until you get comfortable with the idea of a snake not feeding for a month or so.

Cal Kings is another snake that can be iffy. These guys are either gentle lambs or aggressive monsters with a constant hunger. Its kinda like Russian roulette.

Now if you are a bit daring another species to try are either bulls, pines or gophers. They can be a bit pushy and loud but make good pets. They seem to be aggressive but its all bluff and if you get a young one and work with it, well it shouldn't be a problem for you.

An Hognose might look mean but there generally very sweet. You always have exeptions though. Usually she eats like a hog but right now she's on strike. Their attitude is what i like most about them. There really active as well. Might make a great pet.

Ok where i am right now is....Uggg :uhoh: i don't go to school... Am home all day taking care of the house. when am 18! (I CANT WAIT!) i have my own house waiting for me. Up by Kathy love. i want to breed corn snakes. (not as a whole day job.)it would make sense if i got another female then it would help me out. but all my corn snakes are not even a year old. so as am waiting for then to grow up i might get another kind of snake. i talked to my reptile shop by me. they said they have (Ball pythons babies for $29 and yearling's for $50-tame and feeding well)

OK. While I am partial to my corn(my 1st snake). My MBK is awesome. A little musky sometimes. LOL. But we just got our first N Pines. They are the sweetest snakes. Hissing and tail shaking the first 3 days. Then, as someone put it to me, they get "embarrassingly tame". They are great. :crazy02:

I'm a fan of kingsnakes. They are generally similar to corns, but the temperments can vary greatly from snake to snake. The care is similar enough that kings and corns can be kept in the same rack, but they are generally more confident and more willing to be out and exploring...especially the likes of a Cali king or a greyband(both considered diurnal, rather than nocturnal). A Florida King or an MBK are both GREAT suggestions as well.

It's a matter of opinion. In my own opinion...MOST captive bred snakes make great pets, simply because they all offer their own, unique personalities and challenges. Do your research, handle lots of snakes, and figure out which ones appeal to you most.

FWIW...if you plan on breeding corns...there is nothing wrong with gathering your collection now. It takes 3-4 years for females to reach breeding size, so getting a hatchling now wouldn't hurt your future plans of breeding, as she would need to grow, anyhow. You have to plan fairly far ahead with your pairings and genetics, unless you plan to purchase surplus adults from elsewhere for all of your breeding plans. Personally...I enjoy raising them from hatchling, though I do have a pair of breeders that I bought as sub-adults to "jump-start" my breeding projects...
