when is a snake "an adult"

when is a snake classified as an adult? - when have its reproductive organs matured? - how do these relate to size - for example - my male corn is about 15 months old about 150 grams - about 34 inches long - he has been fed a litttle on the lean side but is perfectly healthy as best i can tell.

When it's capable of reproducing, it's an adult. This can happen as early as 9 months with corns. Males can often breed at 18 months of age - some would probably breed earlier, but daylight and temperature cyling trigger breeding. So they usually breed in the spring.

As far as males go, I've certainly heard of a ten month old siring a clutch of fertile eggs.

I'm not sure I'd agree that the ability to reproduce is really indicative of being an adult. 12 year old humans can breed (they certainly do round my way :( ) but they really aren't adults!

That's a bit of an anthropomorphic statement - snakes aren't people. From a biological standpoint, if something can reproduce it's an adult. The culture in the United States puts man-made "rules" on what constitutes being an adult - and the rules aren't even consistent (e.g. you can join the army at 18, but can't drink until you're 21).

I classify a snake as an adult when it is feeding on adult mice and weighs 300 grams. I start them on adult mice at about 200 grams, but they are still in a rapid growth phase.

thanks all

thanks for the replies - cecil is taking petco's adult version which is 19 grams - he's about 150 grams - kinda lines up closely with what nanci said - again - th'x all
