when is too early to handle

WELL...

You will get varying opinions but most will agree that waiting for at least a week is a good idea. That doesn't mean that you can't look at it or perhaps gently pick it up briefly to make sure it is ok, but handling is stressful and it is best to let the little guy get settled in and eating before you start prolonged handling. That can take quite a bit for some snakes and be quite quick for others, as you will ascertain by reading the different posts.

A lot depends on the individual snake. I have one that, right out of the egg, was mellow and secure. She has always been curious but relaxed in her interaction. Handling her has never been a big deal. I have another that has been the polar oposite, right out of the egg. She still hasn't started to calm down and she's going on 3 months old, where the other hatchlings that I have are calming down and getting used to being held!

So, another rule of thumb is to see how the individual snake reacts. If it is moving wildly, acting frantic, trying to escape, etc., give the little guy time to adjust before you start regular handling.

Congrats on your baby...
