When to up viv size?

Hey guys, my little corn is doing wonderful and growing like a champ. I am curious though when I need to buy a larger viv for him? It's hard to measure him, and I just fed him so I cant get him out at the moment.... But he reaces from fingertip to elbow quite easily if not longer. Right now I have him in a 12x12x24 Barrs cage. At what size should I move him to a larger viv, and what would be the best permanent viv size? So I dont have to buy another one in his lifetime. Thanks!

When I was 1st starting I had my 1st in a 55gallon (of which he still lives 13 yrs later). It measured 48x12x18. They are pretty cheap to come by and you can buy pre made screen tops for them that will fit. This would be plenty big to house your corn forever.

I really like the Barrs cages, so would their 48x12x12 work? I dont exactly know what the dimesions of a long 20gallon take would look like... so Im just curious.

Oh, to add.....Torque is finally getting old enough to want to explore during the evenings instead of hide. I used to only be able to catch him out at 3 in the morning when I left for work, but now around 9 or 10pm he's climbing over his hides and slitherin around. yay!

I think 20 longs are 12x12x30, but don't hold me to that.

You're absolutely right Mary Beth. :)

And the Barr's cage you're looking at is the same length as a 55 gallon, just not as tall. But corns aren't arboreal per se, your snake would have more than enough room.

So at what size should I definitely upgrade my viv? I dont want him to feel cramped, Im just not sure when its necessary for him to have a larger viv. As or right now he stretches out along one side and then around the corner, and if the water bowl didnt cover a large portion of the cool side hes probably 3 inches or so longer than the length of the viv.

I need to start saving up for the larger viv, and dont want to wait too long if he should be in a larger viv already.

I'd definitely get him a new viv, right now. If he's fingertip to elbow, that ~2 feet and it's nice to have your viv as longer than the snake you want to keep growing. I had a 48" long 55 gallon for Willow (corn), but the lid was terrible and I couldn't find a new on that fits because it's an old odd fishtank. (Now my little Leopard Gecko is having fun in it.) So, now all my corns are in 12"x12"x30". I'd like to get 48" longs of all of them sometime, but I think the 30"s are sufficient for adult corns.

Isn't it fun when they start to become explorers? My girlfriend's ball python has been a big time explorer, lately.
