Where does a UTH go?

Hello everyone!

My girlfriend and I are having a little debate on whether a UTH is supposed to go outside, underneath the viv, or inside. I say outside, but she is convinced that the UTH is supposed to go inside. If the UTH is inside the viv, then your snake can easily get burned if it's in direct contact with the UTH, right? Anyway, I'll let you guys be the judges.

I usually place the UTH on the outer vertical side of the tank. IE: If its a 20 long, i put it on the lower half of the left side vertical. I have found this gives sufficient heat, and its less likely that my precious little ones will burn themselves. Reminder : with a UTH, it's crucial to use a Thermostat of some sort with a probe in the substrate near the UTH.

The under tank heater is placed on the outside, on the bottom of the tank. Placing it on the side does no good for belly heat, and is just as likely to burn your snake. OC, not sure where you've heard otherwise. You will need a thermostat, however, to control the UTH, otherwise it gets far to hot and can burn/kill your snake. The probe for the thermostat is what goes inside the tank. You'd place the probe, preferably with a dab of hot glue or something, on the glass inside the tank, directly above the UTH. Then set the thermostat to 85 degrees. You also need a digital thermometer, place the digital thermometer probe directly next to the thermostat probe.

i have a wooden viv and the base is bout half and inch thick, i have my heat mat in the tank, will the mat still heat up enough to heat the inside of the viv if i have it under neath rather than inside?

ive had the mat inside for about 3 months now and it seems to be ok, i never see my corn in the water dish or anything. thought i'd add that in too

The problem with it being inside the tank is that you risk serious malfunctions. If the snake poops on it, spills water, that can short it out and cause a fire. It also is a much higher risk for burning the snake. If you HAVE to have it inside the enclosure, there are a few threads around that talk about placing a ceramic tile over them. I have that in one of my enclosures.

ah ok i see, would a plane of glass (from an old viv) on top, do you think that would be ok?
