crazy for corns
hey i noticed you guys had all sorts of different colored corns. the pet store where i got mine had one "classic" corn (the one i baught), 4-5 snow corns, 2 blizzard corns, and like 5 creamsicle corns.

looking through the pitcures, i found i really like the abbott's ones (espacially since my last name is abbott), and i like the black ones (that dont have stripes)

my questions are:

1.if i were to ask to buy those kind of corns, what would i call them (i would sound really stupid saying "black ones")

2. where would i buy those kind of corns?

3. in general, how much do those morphs cost?

The "black ones" are most likely anerys. They are a fairly common morph and can usually be purchased for a relatively cheap price.

The Abbott's are Okeetees - it is a selectively line bred normal to produce brighter background color and nice, dark, thick borders.

You can find Okeetees, Love Line Okeetees and Abbott's Okeetees in a lot of various locations. For the Abbott's Okeetees - try Lee Abbott's website - http://leesokeetees.com/ and for Love Line Okeetees check out Kathy Love's website - http://www.corn-utopia.com/.

Both of them are highly respected breeders in the hobby.

http://www.leesokeetees.com/ <--- This is where you want to get the abbott's from.
You can pick up a "black corn" or anery just about anywhere, the cornsnake for sale section of this forum has a list of breeders stickied at the top so you may be able to find one there, or just go to a local show.

The black ones are called anery. Pronounced ann-er-y. There are several breeders on this site that have anery for sale. Check the classified section.

are there any national chain stores that sell them? im not sure i want them shipped.

im sure u guys have had snakes shipped. are they taken care of while being shipped? not jarred up too much? kept within thier temperature range?

what i mean is, is it ok for them to be shipped?

PS so would i say "black anery" or just "anery"

You would say anery.

Many of us have snakes shipped or ship snakes all the time. Probably many of us that do would rather have our snakes shipped than sitting in a pet store. We pack them so that it won't matter how much the box gets banged around--the snake inside will be fine--and we pay attention to shipping temperatures and take various precautions to see that they don't get too cold or too hot.

Just anery is fine - although if you buy one in a pet store - they may just call it a black cornsnake or black albino is a term I have heard used in pet stores before as well.
In general - you are better off buying a snake from a reputable breeder vs. a petstore anyways. You can find genetic information, feed and shed records etc... from a breeder. I have also heard a lot of horror stories about pet store buys that were in ill health.

Breeders who sell and ship snakes are certified to ship fedex. That is the only legal way to do it. The snakes are packaged nice and comfy so they are not jarred around and depending on time of year, sometimes a heat pack (in the winter) or a cold pack (in the summer) is included to make sure they don't get too cold or hot. They are always sent priority overnight so that they arrive first thing in the morning spending as little time in transit as possible.

ok. thanks guys. what is a good price for an anery?
Depends on where you get it. I have seen them as cheap as normal cornsnakes - around $20-$30. Sometimes from a breeder you can get them cheap like that, sometimes if they carry hets (genes to produce other morphs when bred with another snake carrying the same genes) they can be a little more expensive.

Also - keep in mind that anerys colors do change as they get older. They do not usually retain the stark dark coloration they have as babies. Most of them lighten up to a gray coloration and develop some yellow on their sides.

As an example - this is my boy Jude when I got him as a baby:

And this is what he looks like now:

ok. well i dont need hets, since im not going to breed them.

if i do get another one, can i keep them both in the same cage? it wouldnt be permanent, since i only have a 10 gallon right now. im going to have to upgrade to a 20 gal at some point anyways, so if i put another snake in the cage i'd just have to do that sooner, and get 2 20 gals.

i really like the black and grey from the top pick, but not as much the yellow and grey.

do they have any that dont change yellower as they get older?

Not really - unfortunately with anerys it is a normal color progression. There are some exceptions to the rule, but you have no idea as a baby if they will develop the yellow or not - there is no way to tell.

I got lucky with this girl - at two years old she has very little/if any yellow on her at all:

i probably sound really picky, but i like the really dark ones, like the anery babies. are all charcoals that light, or are some darker?

Charcoals are also black/gray and are less likely to develop the yellow found in aneries.

Good one Rich - don't know why I didn't think of that.
Yes - charcoals - sometimes called Anery B - are also a dark colored snake that as Rich mentioned - don't develop much yellow at all if any. They can be a little more expensive than an anery (average around $40-$50 I believe).
