I have switched ALL of my snakes to heating pads and sweater boxes. They seem to have much less trouble shedding that way. But that's a bit off the subject, huh? I brought it up because I have used both. Using radient heat lowers the humidity in a tank and it uses more electricity. Heating pads do get much hotter but raise the humidity. They do become a fire risk if they are used improperly. For example, they shouldn't be place in direct contact with a wooden surface. The heat will dry the wood out and cause a fire. Always use melamine coated wood for shelving. If you just need one heating pad and not a whole shelf, then a melamine cutting board works great. Simply put the little plastic feet that come with the heater on the bottom of the cutting board...this allows air to circulate under it. Then stick the heater on top of the cutting board. Set your tank or sweater box on top of that. I've been told that it is a good idea to use a thermostat to regulate the temp of the heating pad, but I've not made it that far, yet. Anyway, good luck with whichever method you decide to use.
