Which way for heat pads?

I am getting ready for my first corns and I am having a dilemma with the U.T.H. "Corn Snakes" by Kathy Love and Bill Love recommends not using the adhesive on the pads, but use duct tape so they can be moved if needed. The pads themselves (of course) instruct that I must apply it to tank with the adhesive. Any thoughts?

it would depend on the tank you're getting.

I have a little plastic fanarium for my two hatchlings with the heat mats Under their tank. Both are on a thermostats with me checking their temps daily.

My friend has her two snakes in monkfield tanks with the heatpads under the glass panel.an i have another friend who's heat mat is in the tank, stuck down with duct tape.

Personally I'm not sure i'd have the heat mat in the tank.. i've heard of some horror stories where the heat mats are broken and stay on to the point where i've heard of snakes burning their bellies really badly

either way.

If you use the adhesive on the pad, you won't be able to peel it off and use it on another tank.

If you use foil tape, you can use the pad again on another tank later on.

Peel off the backing, stick it to a piece of tinfoil, and tape it to the tank. That's how I do it. There is a very remote chance that the paper backing could catch fire. I don't know of anyone that that has happened to, but it's best to avoid it. And if the mat breaks or you want to put it on another tank later on... They are extremely difficult to get off, and even harder to get them off without wrecking them.

I mean that they are hard to get off if you stick them to the tank. If you use the tinfoil method, it saves headache all around.

I used to stick them to the viv in the beginning, tried the tinfoil, and have never gone back. I run 3 vivs with it stuck on and 3 vivs with the tinfoil. There is no noticeable difference in quality of belly heat. The tinfoil and tape mats stay more securely attached than the mats I stuck on.

I use the stick the UTH to foil method as well. Beyond the fact that the paper may burn (highly unlikely) aluminum is one of the best conductors around, while paper would insulate (though that thickness, not much). I use duct tape because mine were all stuck on before I learned about foil tape. So while I agree foil tape is better I've had no trouble with the duct tape on the outside of the viv if that's what you have readily available.

Kickflare, about your friend with duct tape in the viv, that is a tragic accident waiting to happen. If you have or use your UTH in the viv I've head of people putting it under a ceramic tile. I also think Vivexotic or someone sells a glass holder for the UTH. I'm not a certain of that because Vivexotic is not sold in the US, though the rest of the Hagen/ExoTerra line is.
