Why so darn expensive???

While looking online for cornsnake prices (to have something to compare while I looked locally), most were 45 or so for regulars. The cheapest I can find here is 99.99 for a regular. Why are they so expensive here??? I'm almost better off buying online and paying for shipping. Any Canadians here have this problem? (I'm in Burnaby, BC--Very close to Vancouver)

I've seen beautiful hatchling normals for $10.00 - $25.00 a lot. You just have to check out different breeder sites.
Cheers.

I think you just have to find a Canadian breeder. Check out the Canadian Member's thread. I'm sure they could help you find a reasonable price :D

Pricing here in Canada is just more expensive. There was a thread a week or so ago discussing pricing strategies from one side of the border to the other. Your best bet, if you'd like to keep your cost down is to either check out a reptile show, or as mentioned, look at some of the breeders here. Mary V. is in Alberta I think, and Ruth went to the left coast at one point (I'm not sure if she's planning on going back or not). I know that there are few more that way. You may want to post in the Canadian Members forum, and see who else pops up.
Good luck!

not much of a shock.. the "super pet" here in london CURRENTLY wants... 149.99 for corn snakes.. the morphs you can choose from are... 5 normals 2 anerys 4 amels and 1 snow.. all priced the same.. all housed together... and probaly fed together to.. such a shame...

Pet store prices are uniformly high - but if you are patient and willing to wait for the herp shows that occur during the summer, you can get one for a very reasonable price directly from a breeder. Definitely the way to go.

There are plenty of Canadian breeders who will ship once the weather is warmer, so that is an option too. Consider dropping by the Canadian forum and posting a listing of what you are looking for, but basically pet stores charge a lot for them because people are willing to pay those prices.

I was at petland yesterday and they and they had normals for $120!!

Wow, I wonder what they'd sell a bloodred for because that's what a local pet store in my area is charging for one :shrugs: .

They only had normals, anery, and snows. I dont think if they had something like that they would even know. ARGH! They were so stupid! You should see my rant about it... But still freaking expensive.

local breeders and reptile expos are the way to go. the chain pet stores are a rip off. must have high overhead or something.
i got Blaze from a local pet store that buys from breeders at expos/shows. i got him for $20. and the owner of the store breeds corns and sells albinos for $40.

I payed $50 for Felix. I know I could have gotten one cheaper but I fell in love so . . . :) S/he's a sweet heart!

thats not too bad...i've seen corns for sale at petco and petland for $60 and up. petco had albinos for $80. ridiculous really...

I got my 2 month old Snow from a local store that actually cares about their pets for $40. I asked them specific questions about feeding day/ how they are fed ect and the owner was like they eat on sunday and we take them out of the tank and put them in a paper bag with the thawed pinky and leave them alone for 1 to 1 1/2 hours so its totally secluded and dark for the snake with little stress as possible. That tells me they actually care about their animals beyond making $40. Anytime I goto a walmart style pet store (Petco, Petsmart, ect) and you ask them a question about an animal and they just find you a book on snakes/corn snakes and say I donno maybe this book can tell you. I usually say thanks ,put it back then leave and goto a REAL pet store.

Bottom line, real local pet stores/breeders are WAY better then walmart style pets stores. Not saying OMG if you buy your snake at Petco it is anyworse or better, it's just local stores usually take the time to care where as super pet stores usually dont care anything beyond making a sale. Besides I feel better keeping my money localy even if sometimes it costs a little more.

Keepo in mind, there is a price difference between the Canadian and US markets.. There are times when I get corns at a whole sale price of $10 in the US. I have no idea what the whole sale is in Canada.. But it comes to two slightly different economies in a way..

Regards

spyderballer - you got lucky.
So far I've never been in a local pet shop that is good with snakes. Of course Petco/Petsmart are really bad, I'm not sayin' they ain't. I have horror stories from every place I've shopped. For example: One shop had a corn hatchling and a ball python in a small tank together, another had an albino corn hatchling 2/3 eaten by an albino kingsnake, yet another told me to feed my new garter crickets! (no mention of a heating pad or a garter's real diet), small snakes on display in tiny deli cups with that awful colored sand and no water source or hide, and then today I saw a big yellow rat snake in with a very upset whip snake... It goes on and on. I'm glad you found a good shop. The best place to get a snake is from a knowledgable breeder. I can't wait 'til the expo comes to town! Then you breeders out there better have your snakes cheap and purty too!
