Why under the water bowl?

Well I just fed my little one a big fat pinky yesterday and I am being extra careful not to disturb him because its the biggest meal I have ever given him and I don't want him regurging. I believe I have been underfeeding him size of pinky wise because I just read in a book, a corn snakes meal should not be any larger that 1.5-2 times his head/biggest part of body. Well he is only a little wider than a a pencil but the pinkies I have been feeding him which I got from Petco :nope: were no wider than he was. So I bought some pinkies from the local reptile shop and they are twice as big as his previous meals. I gave him the smallest one I could find but I just seemed huge compared to what he has been eating ( I will have to get a scale, I hate not knowing something with certainty). So, I just got home from work and went to go change his water and as I walked the dish to the kitchen I see this red tail curl over my finger. I quickly put my hand under the dish and 'drop'. Out falls Hugo. It was only a foot drop into my hand but Geeez he could dropped to the floor. Now I will wait and see if he holds his meal down. I really don't think it will be a problem but it still worries me.:awcrap:

My butter hide there too. He's older than yours tho.
I guess yours might just feel secure there.
Don't fret, it's ok.

Yeah there's really nothing to worry about there. Snakes are amazing and know exactly when they need to be by the heatmat. I was worried at first too because my first corn would always eat and go straight under the water bowl. But he's never had a problem.

It's dark and secluded...just what they need.

Ah. Not his head - his body. And 1.5 times. The food should be about 1.5 times the width of his body. If you offer an item twice the size of his head, that's going to be a problem.

Still, at least you now know about his death-defying water bowl trick and you can be on the lookout for it in future! Good luck - fingers crossed for you.
